Can you believe that it is almost back to school time already? I can’t! I feel as though summer has just gotten started. I am not ready for it, but I know that it is coming and ready or not, I need to be! This year Josh will be going into 6th grade. (Quick, someone grab me some tissues!) He is old enough for lockers, over night camp, and beginning to have the desire to stay home alone. (And still, the desire for a cell phone. Someone help me!) While I am happy that he has this new found independence (and that he is old enough to start taking on some of the roles!) we are still learning. And we are still starting out small. But the funny thing is, what some would consider small feats, to the people who are new to this whole independence thing, we are finding them to be big! Really big! With really big impacts! One of the things that we are starting to let Josh do is have more control in the kitchen. He isn’t ready to operate the stove yet (by himself), but there are lots of tasks that he can do on his own. He loves this new independence and to be honest, so do I! So to help foster this in him, I’ve been on the look out for easy snacks that he can make for himsself. Luckily I found some! They are perfect for after school snacks and for budding ‘chefs’ to make on their own!

Bagel Bites and Delimex are perfect for him to make on his own!

Bagel Bites are small, bite size pizzas on bagels and a big hit. Bagel Bites are made with real cheese, homemade sauce and contain 0 grams of Trans Fat. (Very important!)

Delimex makes a variety of snacks including chicken and cheese taquitos and the apple cinnamon taquitos. You can find both Bagel Bites and Delimex products at Walmart in the freezer aisles.

Josh was really excited to pick out his own snacks and get them home to get cooking! I was excited to see him figure it out!

The first thing he did was read the instructions. Good choice!

The Bagel Bites come in a microwavable tray which is nice. You just simply open the package.

And put them in the microwave for 2 minutes and 20 seconds!

For Josh, the hardest part was waiting for them to cool afterwards!

Luckily for him he had another snack to prepare to keep him occupied. He chose the Chicken and Cheese Taquitos from Delimex. Making them was just as easy. You roll two taquitos in a paper towel.

And microwave for 1 minute! That’s it!

He did it! He made his snack all by himself. He felt very grown up being able to cook when he felt hungry. And he even put his dishes in the dishwasher without being asked. 🙂

As for how they tasted….

He really enjoyed them both!

The Bagel Bites were his favorite!

So here we are. One happy family. Josh gets to foster his independence and for me, I get to see him! I love the confidence that this has given him. He’s even offered to cook dinner.

So we will be having peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, potato chips and Delimex apple cinnamon taquitos for dessert. And I can’t wait!
