The Kennedy Space Center

The Kennedy Space Center

I remember a long, long, long time ago when my school offered a ‘field trip’ to go down to The Kennedy Space Center. It was kind of an expensive trip and at the time I wasn’t able to go. But it’s always been in the back of my mind.

Flash forward some years later and my son LOVES space. Again, The Kennedy Space Center came to mind. We try to get to Florida so we can see my grandparents, but they are on the Gulf of Mexico side and The Kennedy Space Center is on the Atlantic Ocean side so we have still not been able to make it. So when I learned that while at Tuckaway Shores we would be stopping by I was really excited. (And Josh was a little jealous!)

It did not disappoint. At all!

We were lucky enough to have a tour guide and she was wonderful. She knew so much about anything and everything there was to know about the Space Program.

I really learned a lot while we were there. Everything seems super-size there. I mean, we all know rockets (and missiles) are big, but when you are standing next to them, WOW! They are really big!

This tree was pretty cool. The seed was actually on the Apollo XIV Moon Mission and then brought back to Earth where it has grown into this big tree. When you think of the fact that this tree started out on the moon in space, it’s pretty neat!

The Atlantis Space Shuttle has made its home at the Kennedy Space Center. When you go in, there is a great movie to watch with some background information and then an introduction short movie. It was emotional! I looked around and lots of people were wiping tears in their eyes. When it is over, the screen is lifted and you are face to face with Atlantis!

This was actually used in many missions. Our guide explained to us about where things were when this was actually in use and what life would be like for the astronauts.

There are some really fun things inside, including a space play area for kids to play in and a big slide. When you slide downstairs, you have the option of doing the Shuttle Launch Experience. I highly recommend it! You go in, get your photo taken and get ready for what astronauts call the most realistic shuttle experience. It’s really awesome to experience that! I really can’t wait to bring Josh back so he can experience it as well!

Then we went to have lunch with an astronaut. John-David Bartoe has flown on many missions and did a great job telling everyone about his life as an astronaut. There was a school that was there with us and they asked lots of questions and he made sure to answer them all. The kids really loved it!

We then went on a tour and learned about the space program starting at the very beginning.

Can you believe that two astronauts fit in there? 🙂

Everything was so cool.

This is what mission control used to look like when we put a man on the moon! It’s hard to believe that people were able to create not only a rocket, but then get someone to the moon and back without computers and technology that we have today. They were still doing their math with pens and paper. Amazing!

I really can’t imagine going to Florida and not coming back to visit The Kennedy Space Center!
