DIY: Silk Dyed Easter Eggs Tutorial

Silk dyed Easter Eggs eggs together

Silk Dyed Easter Eggs Its a Fabulous Life

See this year’s eggs here! (They turned out AWESOME!)

Easter is about a month away; can you believe it? I wanted to share with you my family’s favorite way to dye Easter eggs so you have time to get your supplies if you want to make some as well! We make silk dyed eggs each year for a few reasons:

  1. They are super easy.
  2. They are mess free! No spilling, no dripping, no dye stains!
  3. They are gorgeous!
  4. Everyone thinks you are an Easter Egg making master because they are quite impressive. 🙂

Silk dyed Easter eggs step 1 cut the tie

You will need 100% Silk ties. On the back of the tie there should be a small tag that says either 100% silk or all silk. Dark colors work best and we’ve had the best luck with some of the ugliest ties! You want ugly ties on your egg – not your man! 🙂 You will also need some white fabric of some sort (I’ve used an old pillow case before and last night I used a flour sack that I had cut up. You can get a pack of flour sacks for about $1 each at Target). You will also need hair ties (or you could use bread ties but hair ties are the easiest), vinegar and a pair of scissors.

First you need to cut the tie and take out the lining. Flip your tie over and just snip like shown above. There will be a lining piece that comes out. All you want is the pretty silk pattern.

Silk dyed Easter eggs step 2

Place your egg on a section of the silk tie.

Silk dyed Easter eggs step 3

Gather the silk around the egg. Try to pull it tightly around so the pattern lays flat on the egg. Secure it tightly with a hair tie.

silk dyed Easter eggs step 4

Then wrap with the white fabric and secure. In a pot, boil water and add 1 cup of vinegar. Place the eggs in the water for about 20 minutes. Remove the eggs and place in a colander to cool. This is the hard part – waiting for them to cool!

Silk dyed Easter eggs step 5

After they have cooled unwrap them!

Silk dyed Easter eggs egg

Silk dyed Easter eggs egg 2

I bought a wild flower print tie and I absolutely loved the eggs that it made!

Silk dyed Easter Eggs egg 3

The yellow wasn’t quite dark enough but the other colors from the tie made some really great details!

Silk dyed Easter Eggs eggs together

We only did a few eggs last night, but I will show you our Easter Eggs when we dye them in a few weeks! In the mean time, hit up the thrift stores for some great ties! I can usually find them for $0.50 – $1.00 each.

I’ll be linking up here.

Best Packing Tips – #WrinkleFreeTravel

Best Tips For Family Travel

Spring Break is coming! And summer vacations are beginning to be planned. So this week on #MomsCheckIn we are talking about our best packing tips and traveling with the family. Do you have a tip or a trick that helps you? We want to know!

Be sure to join us for a #WrinkleFreeTravel Twitter Party next Thursday (3/19) from 1-2 PM (Eastern). We will be giving away lots of awesome prizes! You really don’t want to miss it!

I’m not great at packing light but I’m getting a little better! I’ve got three tips that seem to help me. First, make a list. You’re bound to forget something if you don’t (and by ‘you’ I mean ME). Start it at least a few days before you go and add to it as you think of things. Second, pack some versatile clothing that you can wear more than once to cut down on the amount you need to haul. And finally, put an empty laundry basket in your room about a week before you leave. As you wash things you know you want to take, place them in the basket instead of putting them away. Then you won’t be washing that thing you just NEED to take on this trip at the last second. Been there, done that! It’s less stressful this way. Happy trails!

I always lay everything out on our bed before I start packing. I’ve learned that by laying it all out, I realize that I don’t need near as many items as I first think. Reducing the number of unwanted items makes packing much easier! It also helps reduce wrinkles on the clothes if they aren’t all crammed in. I remove the rest of the wrinkles that are inevitable with suitcases with help from Downy.

We don’t travel very often, but when we do I always do the same things my mom did. She was the queen at packing light. Always start with a packing list for the family, including travel time snacks and entertainment for the kids. Roll your clothes when packing instead of folding, it saves space and you have less wrinkles. Pack shoes on top. Make sure to put liquids like shampoo, lotions, perfume, etc. in zip bags in case they leak. That’ll keep your clothing safe. Put all your chargers together in one suitcase so they don’t get lost or left behind.

Wait, you mean you aren’t supposed to just grab everything in you own and cross your fingers? I buy inexpensive shower caps that I can slide over my shoes before I put them in our suit cases so dirt doesn’t transfer to the clothes.

I’ll admit fashion is not my forte but I always feel better when I think I look a little more stylin’. I’m all about comfort and practicality with my wardrobe and think accessories can go a long way to jazz up any outfit. I’m a shoe lover and hoarder and love unique, colorful styles. Add a matching handbag to really look put together and your favorite jewelry, even something simple, completes the look. I usually go for a silver watch or bracelet (or a few!) and a pair of silver earrings. I’ve got short hair so something that dangles usually looks best.

My style is very casual. I love blue jeans and t-shirts. That’s what you’ll usually always find me in. However, I do love cute shoes and accessories. Those can make or break an outfit. I love name brands, but can’t always afford them, so I love to find ways to get what I want without giving away the bank!

I’m a huge fan of 3 things when it comes to style. 1. It HAS to be comfortable! 2. I love classic pieces that I can use time and time again. 3. My style has to be affordable! I’m a huge fan of layering pieces together. I wasn’t so sure about skinny jeans when they came back in style. (I love my boot cut jeans!) But they have been quickly growing on me! And the colored jeans? I think they are so fun and a perfect pop of color! Moms can totally rock the colored jean trend!

Tips For Soothing Sick Kids – Moms Check In

Tips For Soothing Sick Kids

There is nothing worse than having a sick kid. Your heart breaks for them! Here are our best tips on how to soothe sick kids. Be sure to RSVP for our Twitter Party next Thursday (2/12) from 1-2 PM (Eastern). We will be giving away lots of awesome prizes! #MomsCheckIn

LindsayHeadShot3Border-300x300

We’ve had a rough year with colds and sicknesses already. And it’s only early February! When the kids are sick I try to keep them hydrated and drinking plenty of fluids. The nighttime cough seems to be our biggest problem and the best tricks I have to help that are to elevate their heads (I give them an extra pillow or put one under the mattress when they were in cribs) and give them a spoonful of honey before bed. That seems to coat the throat and give some relief. Finally, we just pray for an early spring!

– Lindsay is the mom of 2 and author of See Mom Click. She shares great deals, Disney happenings and recipes. You can follow her on Twitter here!

This time of year is so difficult — I feel like there are germs everywhere! We use a humidifier, drink lots of water, and take Vitamin C. I also make sure that we all wash our hands or use sanitizer a lot so we don’t spread anything. I also make sure we get lots of snuggles in — I’m positive that helps Sam feel better quickly!

– Stephanie is the mom to Sam and the author of Spaceships and Laser Beams. If you ever need party ideas her site is the place to visit! Specializing in all things boy, it’s full of inspiration! Follow her on Twitter here!

Jenni-Eaves1-213x300

This time of year it seems like Eli stays sick. We actually just got over a round of virus yuckiness through our house. When he’s sick, I keep a cool-mist humidifier running in his room through the night. During the day, I also keep a diffuser running with essential oils in it. I let him sleep with me because he wakes up often in the night when he’s sick so that makes him feel better. I make sure he drinks lots of liquids and that I have Jello stocked in the fridge. I keep lip moisturizers on hand too because his little lips get so chapped when he’s sick and can’t breathe though his nose. I hate it when they’re sick. Booo.

I’m really thankful that we don’t get sick very often. In fact, Josh had his first fever since I can remember last month. I tried to make sure that he got plenty of fluids and plenty of rest. For everyone else in our house, it meant extra hand washing!
