Apple Slice Doughnuts – Healthy Fun Snack Ideas

Apple Slice Doughnuts - Healthy Fun Snack Ideas

Doughnuts or apple slices….our kids go for the doughnuts first every time. Ok, I go for the apple slices every time too. I don’t know what it is, but there is just something about a yeast doughnut, dipped in chocolate frosting with sprinkles on it. I just can’t resist!

The other day, I was trying to think up a funny prank to pull on the kids. (Because I’m evil.) They had been complaining about our lack of doughnuts lately. So I decided to make some ‘doughnuts’.

Apple Slice Doughnuts - Healthy Fun Snack Ideas

Why I love these apple slice doughnuts:

  • They were easy.
  • They were fast.
  • They were really yummy.
  • They totally worked! The kids really thought they were doughnuts!

Apple Slice Doughnuts - Healthy Fun Snack Ideas

So whether you want to make these fun treats as a trick (they would be perfect for April Fool’s Day!) or for a fun treat…I highly recommend them!

A few quick things before I show you the how to.

This apple corer would have been useful and made them look a lot nicer. I bought one for next time, plus, just to use when we are doing apples. (I’m totally thinking of filling an apple with caramel. Just saying…)

These can be made in advance. Just put them on a baking sheet and keep them in the refrigerator. What a fun healthy treat for a party!

Apple Slice Doughnuts - Healthy Fun Snack Ideas

Here is what you will need to make apple slice doughnuts:

  • Apples
  • Whipped Cream Cheese
  • Nutella
  • Food Coloring
  • Sprinkles

Apple Slice Doughnuts - Healthy Fun Snack Ideas

Here is how you make the apple slice doughnuts:

Apple Slice Doughnuts - Healthy Fun Snack Ideas

Wash and slice the apples. Keep the skin on the apples.

Apple Slice Doughnuts - Healthy Fun Snack Ideas

If you have an apple corer, core the apples. If not, you can use a knife.

Apple Slice Doughnuts - Healthy Fun Snack Ideas

Add a bit of whipped cream cheese to a small bowl. Tint the cream cheese whatever color you want your frosting colors to be. It is super important to use the whipped cream cheese to get the frosting texture.

For a chocolate doughnut, use Nutella.

Spread the cream cheese (or Nutella) on the apple slice. Shake a few sprinkles on top.

Ta da! Doughnuts! Aren’t they fun?

Football Stadium Sugar Cookies

Easy Football Stadium Cookies

I love several things in life.

Puppies.

Target.

Concerts.

Easy Football Stadium Cookies

But I really have a love for cookies and football. And these Easy Football Stadium Cookies are a perfect mix of two of my favorite things!

The sugar cookies are actually my Grandma’s recipe. Ok, well, they are a friend of my Grandma’s (shout out to Kathy! Woop! Woop!) but my Grandma did write it on an index card and include in her cookbook of favorite recipes. So I feel like it kind of counts. She makes them every Christmas. They are perfect for busting out the cookie cutters with.

Easy Football Stadium Cookies

But today, Grandma’s cookies are getting brought out for fall. I may love cookies, but I’ll be honest. I am not talented in the cookie decorating department. So when I say that these are easy and that even I was able to make them look good, I mean that they are truly, 100% super simple.

I love the little ‘people’ in the stands behind the field goal. And sugar crystals? Those are my favorite! This is essentially the sugar cookie of my dreams. My favorite cookie recipe. My favorite sprinkles. And my favorite sport.

Easy Football Stadium Cookies

Before you start. Here are few recommendations on things you will need to make these Easy Football Stadium Cookies:

  • Baking Mat – If you don’t have some of these yet, please do yourself a favor and get some. They are inexpensive and I promise you that you will use them 1,000,000 times. Don’t believe me on their awesomeness? Check out the thousand+ 5 star reviews.
  • Parchment Paper – You need it. You can’t make these without it. I like to buy the parchment paper that is pre-cut. In the long run it is cheaper. And now I’m spoiled by not having to tear it. I know, first world problems.
  • Sprinkles – The right sprinkles are key. You need the little ball sprinkles to represent all of the fans cheering in the crowd. These sprinkles scream happy, so I’m sure you will use them on everything – ice cream, pretzels, cookies, etc. I consider it an investment. Ok, maybe not, but I really like these! 🙂
  • Green Sugar Crystals – Sometimes I am highly annoyed with how difficult it can be for me to find sprinkles in basic colors at our local stores. And sugar crystals aren’t any different. I try to stock up with the seasons (St. Patrick’s Day or Christmas for green) but sometimes, they just can’t be found. If you can’t find them at your local store, Amazon is (always) a good option.

Spring Orange Marshmallow Fluff Salad

Orange Marshmallow Fluff Salad

One of our kids is obsessed with cottage cheese. Cottage cheese and fruit. Cottage cheese and pretzels. Some days he even puts cheese on his cottage cheese. I can make a big dinner that I’m insanely proud of myself for and without a doubt, he will say “Can I just have cottage cheese instead?” So awhile back, I was looking for some cottage cheese mixes that he hasn’t tried yet. That’s when I found Fluff Salad.

Spring Orange Fluff Salad

Now, not only is he obsessed with cottage cheese, but he’s obsessed with Fluff Salad as well. It’s the perfect mix of cottage cheese, tons of fruit and whip cream. Oh and marshmallows. Because who doesn’t love mini marshmallows?

This recipe is perfect for taking to pitch-ins, picnics, reunions, or events. People like it. (A lot.) And it makes a lot. A lot. A lot. (Trust me when I say get a big bowl!)

Spring Orange Marshmallow Fluff Salad is the perfect mix of cottage cheese, tons of fruit and whip cream. Oh and marshmallows. Because who doesn’t love mini marshmallows?

Ingredients

Servings:

Instructions
  1. In a really large bowl (trust me, you want a large one!) mix the cottage cheese and the pack of Jell-o.
    Orange Marshmallow Fluff Salad

  2. Fold in the Cool Whip. You will want to make sure that it is frozen or semi-thawed. If you let it fully thaw, then it won’t set up correctly.

  3. Add your oranges and pineapple. Gently mix. You want to be careful with the oranges!

  4. Last thing to add – the marshmallows. Mix one last time!

  5. Transfer your fluff from the bowl to a large baking dish. Smooth out the top and cover. Put in the refrigerator and chill for 4+ hours.

  6. This is perfect for taking to picnics or pitch ins! Nothing goes better with cottage cheese than fruit….except for fruit, whip cream and marshmallows. 🙂

Our favorite Easter Traditions:

LindsayHeadShot3Border-300x300

My Mom always made the ‘lambie cake’ for Easter every year. She has this cake mold shaped like a lamb and she always decorated it up to look so cute every year. I’m not that ambitious but I love a sweet treat for the kids and we have fun filling and hiding baskets and eggs. I think I get a bigger kick out of finding good hiding spots than they do out of finding them!

– Lindsay is the mom of 2 and author of See Mom Click. She shares great deals, Disney happenings and recipes. You can follow her on Twitter here!

Easter was always one of my favorite holidays growing up. My dad would always buy about 10 large chocolate bunnies and hide them around our living room. (Why so many? So he could eat them, too! Haha) After we had our 9am chocolate fix, we’d head to church and then to my grandparent’s house for turkey dinner with all the fixings. Every year it was the same and I loved it. We’re still developing our traditions with my son Sam, but Easter is becoming one of his favorites.

We always had Easter Egg hunts at my grandma and papaw’s house when I was little. Now that I have my own family, we still get together every year with our big ole’ family and let the littles hunt eggs. They always have such a great time. My addiction to those Cadbury Creme Filled Eggs comes into full on and I always have to keep a stash hidden. Shhhhh!!!

I love Easter. It’s an important day for us and what it symbolizes. We try to do something really fun each year. Last year for the older kids we put glow sticks in the eggs and let them hunt them after dark. They loved that! It’s a wonderful day filled with faith, friends, family and of course, a trip from the Easter Bunny!

15. Add a puzzle piece….

This is one of my favorite ideas! Usually at our house the kids get their eggs, dump them and count up their candy. Then the parents go through counting eggs (usually two or three times) to make sure we don’t have eggs that get stranded outside. While you are filling up the eggs but one puzzle piece in each egg. Then, once the kids find the eggs they can take the puzzle pieces out and put the puzzle together. If the puzzle is complete, they have found all the eggs!

Check out some great puzzles here!

Oreo Spider Cookies & Cream Cookies – Halloween Recipe

Cookies and Cream Cookies With Oreo Spiders - Halloween Cookie Recipe

We are getting into one of my favorite times of the year! I am a HUUUUGE fan of Halloween – but the cute, not the creepy! It may only be August (well, it’s practical September now!), but Joshua already has his costume picked out. At first he didn’t want to dress up. He thinks he is too old to go trick or treating (begin the violins because I’m totally crying over here), but once he saw this ‘costume’ he changed his mind. Well, at least about the dressing up part.

I may need to bribe him with a batch of these cookies & cream cookies. They were that good. Total bribe material. Filled with Oreos and white chocolate these cookies are the perfect mix. I’m not an awesome cake/cookie/cupcake decorator, but these are so simple that even I can decorate them.

Ingredients

Servings:

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or use non-stick spray. We like giant cookies so we used a whoopie-pie pan.

  2. In a bowl, mix together butter, brown sugar, sugar, eggs, and vanilla.

  3. In a second bowl, mix flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.

  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and combine.

  5. In a sandwich bag, crush the Oreos. You don’t want them to be finely crushed, you want to have chunks of Oreo in your cookies!

  6. Add the Oreos and the white chocolate chips to the batter and mix well.

  7. You will want the cookies to be large enough to hold an Oreo spider. We used a whoopie-pie pan on one batch and the other we used a large ice cream scoop.

  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until they just begin to brown. Let them cool completely on the cookie sheet.

  9. Once the cookies are cool, use the decorating gel to ‘glue’ on an Oreo to the center of each cookie.

  10. Add a dot of decorating gel to the back of each of the candy eyes and stick it into place. And 8 gel spider legs finish your cookie.

  11. Let the cookies sit and the decorating gel will harden.

I recommend that you use:

spider products

  1. I’m all about the parchment paper! I buy the Kirkland brand on Amazon as it’s much bigger than what I can find in stores.
  2. I ordered this Whoopie Pie pan several years ago and I use it all the time! I think I’ve only used it once for actual Whoopie Pies but it’s our favorite pan to make cookies and brownies.
  3. The Wilton Black Decorating Gel is my go to!
  4. We use these fun candy eyes on all kinds of things. They make everything adorable.

Peanut’s Inspired Valentine’s Chocolate Covered Donut Holes

Can you believe that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner? Gosh, I can’t. Every year we have our traditions like making Valentine’s. Josh is older now, but I’m so glad that he still does it with me! His class has long stopped the traditional Valentine’s Day party (I know, it’s sad), but we like to still make some and drop them off at the retirement center near our house. Spreading love…that’s our plan!

Peanuts-Valentines-Day-768x559

One of our other traditions is watching the Peanuts special! It really doesn’t matter what holiday it is, I’m all about the Peanuts special! I think everyone has some Charlie Brown in them. He’s always there and while we may laugh at him a bit, we are always rooting for him! One day he will kick that football!

Valentines-Peanuts-Comic-Strip-768x191

[Tweet “Did you know that the Little Red Hair Girl was based on a woman Schulz worked with and even dated? He even proposed! #PeanutsValentine”]

So the other night Joshua and I spent our evening watching A Charlie Brown Valentine and making an easy treat to package up – Chocolate Covered Donut Holes! YUM! They are quick, super simple, totally festive and so sweet you just need one to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Chocolate Covered Donut Holes

You will need:

  • Donut Holes or regular donuts if you want to coat the tops of them
  • Candy melts – I used red and white
  • Valentine’s Day sprinkles
  • Valentine’s Day straws (optional)

Chocolate Covered Donut Holes

I cut the straws in half and inserted them into the donut holes. You can either have them as donut pops or just use the straws to make dipping easier for little hands!

Chocolate Covered Donut Holes

Spread out a sheet of parchment paper and melt your candy melts according to the package instructions. Dip your donut holes into the melt. Set them on the parchment paper to harden.

Chocolate Covered Donut Holes

We dipped ours in red and after it hardened (it won’t take long!) we dipped them again in white. You can do a solid color or pipe zig zags or even three colors! Get creative!

Chocolate Covered Donut Holes

When you have enough candy coating on them, sprinkle them with sprinkles. Let them sit until the candy has hardened.

Chocolate Covered Donut Holes

Super simple and super fun!

[Tweet “Valentine’s Day treat idea: Chocolate covered donut holes…with heart sprinkles of course!”]

Chocolate Covered Donut Holes

Aren’t these sweet? (Hahaha. I’m so funny!)

Win a Peanuts Valentine's Day Prize Pack

All of these goodies came in my mailbox the other day and I’m so excited I get to give a set away! It’s the perfect prize pack for gifts for your kiddos, great treat holders for holding your Chocolate Covered Donut Holes, and a few goodies for you to keep for yourself!

  • Oriental Trading’s treat box to color, crayons and stickers
  • Snoopy and Woodstock Pez
  • Simon and Schuster’s Happy Valentine’s Day
  • A Charlie Brown Valentine from Warner Home Entertainment
  • Whitman’s Chocolates featuring a Snoopy Plush

Instagram Coasters

This project is inexpensive, quick and really, really, really easy. In fact, the hardest part is picking out your favorite photos! My younger brother recently took a trip to England with his college. I’m guilty of not printing out my photos as often as I should. I have photos saved on phones, Instagram accounts, and on memory cards still loaded in the camera. And I know that if I have stored photos that my brother definitely has some stored photos! So I really wanted to get some in a place that he can show them off, help remember his trip and have something useful. (You know, to help protect all of that really nice, garage sale and taken from your mom’s basement college furniture…) 🙂

So you only need a few supplies – tile coasters, furniture pads, Mod Podge and a foam brush. Oh and an awesome printer!

The HP Envy 4512 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner is an all in one printer, scanner, copier and it did an awesome job printing out some of my brother’s Instagram photos!

I mean look at this! It did a great job printing off these really important photos. I couldn’t be happier!

After your photos are printed, trim them to fit your coasters.

Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge directly to the coaster.

Add your photos and let dry. Gosh, don’t the photos look great? I know as soon as he opens them, he’s going to instantly recognize the photos as ones he took on his trip!

Add a layer of Mod Podge on top of the photos and let dry. This will help seal the photos and make sure that the ink doesn’t bleed from condensation from the glasses.

Once they are dry, add the furniture pads to the bottom of the coaster.

Ta da! That’s it! You are done! I told you, crazy easy!

I was so thrilled with how the coasters for my brother turned out that I couldn’t wait to show them to my friend when she came over later that night. She loved them too and wanted to make a set for herself! She said her printer wasn’t nearly as good as my printer so she printed her photos that day from my house. Not only is the quality great from this printer, but it has a great design and a wonderful touch screen that walks you through processes and gives you great control. She called me from Walmart after she left my house to tell me she was buying her own printer and kicking her old printer to the curb. It’s seriously that good!

I just know that once you try it you will love it as much as we did!
