Pledge To Thank A Veteran!

Disclosure: This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #DogChowDifference #CollectiveBias

As a parent, there are a few things that I try very hard to teach my children. One of them is gratitude and another is appreciation. We strive to implement them in our everyday life. One thing that I am passionate about is making sure that our Veterans know that we appreciate them and how gracious we are of their service. My son’s father is a Veteran, my brother is in the service and we have countless friends (that we are lucky enough to consider family!) also who have sacrificed their time and dedicated their lives for our freedom.

I wish that I had about 60 hours in each day, but the reality is that I don’t. So we do what we can. There is no shame in that! And sometimes inspiration hits me when I least expect it. Like when I am shopping for dog food.

We are lucky enough to have a Dollar General literally at the end of our street. Talk about convenient! We are there all the time. It’s so nice to be able to take a few minutes and walk together (or grab one of the kids) and just spend a few minutes talking and walking. Those few minutes really add to our quality time. Sometimes, we grab the dogs and walk over to do a bit of shopping. We are at Dollar General SO often that everyone knows not only our names, but our dogs’ names too.

I ran in to grab some dog food. We really enjoy shopping at Dollar General not only because of the convenient location, but also because of how clean and easy to find everything is in our store. I can run in, know exactly where to find things and quickly be out the door heading home. Plus they offer great promotions!

Right now, Dollar General has teamed up with Purina® Dog Chow® to support our military vets with every purchase of specially marked bags of Purina® Dog Chow®.

And even more, on October 10th, you can take advantage of 11% savings on Purina® Dog Chow® at Dollar General! The offer is available in-store and online. Low prices and our favorite brands? WINNING!

So once we got home with our Purina® Dog Chow® my mind was twirling. I was so happy to support a great cause and with a purchase that I feel good about giving our dogs. We see Vets all the time and my kids are awesome at thanking them for their service. Creating little cards has been on my mind for a while. I got to work immediately! Well, after the dogs got fed!

If you follow us, then you know all about Lincoln and George, but a few months ago we adopted Stella too. Three rescue dogs in all now. We go through A LOT of dog food. I love Purina® Dog Chow® for a lot of reasons.

  • Made with Real, American-raised Chicken
  • 23 Essential Vitamins and Minerals
  • Always crafted in the USA since 1926
  • Protein for Strong Muscles
  • Crafted in the USA
  • Always crafted in the USA, Purina® Dog Chow® is made with real beef, lamb or American-Raised Chicken.
  • It provides 100% complete and balanced nutrition adult dogs need to help them live long, healthy lives.
  • Why does Purina care so much? Because the food we make isn’t just for your dog, it’s for ours, too.

And, our dogs absolutely love it!

So while the dogs were chowing down, I whipped up these fun little cards to thank a Veteran!

Didn’t they come out cute?

I’m super excited for us to use these cards to thank a Veteran! Super handy and if I don’t say so myself, super cute!

The idea behind them is that you can sign them if you want or even add a gift card if you desire, but mostly to print off and keep in your purse, so when you see a Military member you can hand them one and say thank you.

You can download our cards here!

These cards are an easy way, even as a busy family, that you can remember to thank a member for their service! I hope that you join us in thanking our Vets for their service! These little cards to thank a veteran should make it nice, easy and handy! And don’t forget about October 10th at Dollar General to save big on Purina® Dog Chow®!

How To Adopt A Soldier & What To Send – Family Service Project –

How To Adopt A Soldier & What To Send

How To Adopt A Soldier And What To Send

Volunteering as a family is something that is really important in our household. We are truly grateful for what we have and also for where we have been. At one point, we prayed for the some of the things we have now. And some of the things we have now, we never even imagined we would accomplish. Funny how life works, isn’t it? While we consider ourselves far from where we started, we never want to forget the beginning of our journey. Which for us, gives us motivation to stay humble and make sure that our children grow up knowing how lucky they are, that giving back isn’t something you do for Instagram likes and that serving others is way of life.

Sometimes, finding places to volunteer with kids can be tricky. (You wouldn’t think it would be, but we were surprised – especially when the kids were younger!) But volunteering to send cheer to our military members is a way not only for even the smallest family members to help with, but it lets you volunteer at home and at your own pace. Sometimes, I would love to donate financially to organizations, but it’s not in the budget for that month. But we always have some room for postage or I can pick up a few things on sale for a care package! Plus, the kids always have so much fun with these projects!

(If you are looking for more great family service projects – check out this list of 16 ideas!)

How To Sign Up To Adopt A Soldier

There are so many organizations that you can sign up with! Here are a few to get you started:

How To Adopt A Soldier And What To Send

What do you do when you adopt a soldier?

Well, that answer depends on what you sign up for! Some sign ups are for just letters while others are for care packages. Some are even for handmade items (like baked goods, paracord bracelets, cool ties or hats and scarves)

This should go without saying, but I know life gets busy sometimes, but please, if you sign up to adopt a soldier…please, please, please be sure that you follow through! When you adopt one, they are taken off the list from someone else being able to adopt them. Sending things out in a timely matter is crucial! Some organizations that you can volunteer with may have you make a commitment such as one letter per month. Even with good intentions, make sure that the time commitment is something you can do.

How To Adopt A Soldier And What To Send

What do you send when you adopt a soldier?

There are so many things that you can send! Letters (or for younger children, pictures or artwork) is always appreciated! Keep in mind the different kinds of weather that packages must travel through as well as time. Sometimes it can take a long time for your package to reach it’s final destination not only due to distance but also due to security screenings. If you are sending holiday specific items, they need to be sent early as well as edible items need to be things that won’t melt or expire. (Many places say food items need a 6 month shelf life.) If you are packing a care package, here are some general ideas:

Shipping Tips For When You Adopt A Soldier:

  • Use a durable, heavy duty box (the post office will help with free shipping supplies!)
  • Put items into plastic baggies in case anything breaks or leaks

Other Things To Consider When You Adopt A Soldier:

  • Try to get your neighborhood involved! Host a care package party and invite your neighbors to come and help package items to send out. Neighbors that can’t attend may still offer to donate items and/or money to help cover postage. You can Download a flyer here!
  • Host a sock drive
  • Don’t forget that while many care packages are made with the service men in mind, there are service women there too! FeminineHow To Adopt A Soldier And What To Send hygiene products and girly things are always in need!

Our favorite Easter Traditions:

LindsayHeadShot3Border-300x300

My Mom always made the ‘lambie cake’ for Easter every year. She has this cake mold shaped like a lamb and she always decorated it up to look so cute every year. I’m not that ambitious but I love a sweet treat for the kids and we have fun filling and hiding baskets and eggs. I think I get a bigger kick out of finding good hiding spots than they do out of finding them!

Easter was always one of my favorite holidays growing up. My dad would always buy about 10 large chocolate bunnies and hide them around our living room. (Why so many? So he could eat them, too! Haha) After we had our 9am chocolate fix, we’d head to church and then to my grandparent’s house for turkey dinner with all the fixings. Every year it was the same and I loved it. We’re still developing our traditions with my son Sam, but Easter is becoming one of his favorites.

We always had Easter Egg hunts at my grandma and papaw’s house when I was little. Now that I have my own family, we still get together every year with our big ole’ family and let the littles hunt eggs. They always have such a great time. My addiction to those Cadbury Creme Filled Eggs comes into full on and I always have to keep a stash hidden. Shhhhh!!!

I love Easter. It’s an important day for us and what it symbolizes. We try to do something really fun each year. Last year for the older kids we put glow sticks in the eggs and let them hunt them after dark. They loved that! It’s a wonderful day filled with faith, friends, family and of course, a trip from the Easter Bunny!

What Winter Clothes Kids Really Need

Happy Halloween! I hope everyone is having a fun and safe Halloween tonight! You know what comes after Halloween? The very official start of cold weather. That’s right. Super official. It’s time to go from pretty fall weather to I-Don’t-Want-To-Get-Out-From-Under-The-Covers cold. Also, a very official weather term.

How To Layer Your Child's Clothes For Winter

But what winter clothes do kids really need to keep them warm while they are busy building snowmen or sledding? (Besides hot cocoa of course!)

How To Layer Your Child's Clothes For WinterHow To Layer Your Child's Clothes For Winter

Start With A Base Layer

Ever since I was little, during cold weather we were told to “layer, layer, layer.” But we didn’t layer correctly! Cotton long sleeve shirts definitely were a layer but not one that really works to keep you warm. Choose a starting layer that has a moisture management technology. Different brands call this type of fabric different things such as ClimaSense or Dri-fit. These fabrics help to regulate your temperature and keep you dry. Playing in the snow is hard work! Even though it may be cold, kids (and adults) still sweat. This should be your go-to for your base layer!

How To Layer Your Child's Clothes For Winter How To Layer Your Child's Clothes For Winter

Your Middle Layer

Next layer is the middle layer. You will want to look for materials like wool, down or fleece. This layer is to help insulate you. Sweaters, sweatshirts and sweatpants are all a great option!

How To Layer Your Child's Clothes For Winter

The Outer Layer

Here is the layer you probably pay the most attention to – the outer layer! Look for waterproof gear so a little melted snow won’t hurt! Another thing that you want to pay attention to is how comfortable the coat is. You don’t want your child to not be able to move in it! Also, many brands will put right on their tags what temperatures their gear is meant to withstand.

Snow pants are a must have if your child is planning on playing out in the snow. Whether they are sledding or making snow angels, while jeans are a great, thick material they are no good in the snow! There is nothing worse than being cold and wet!

Don’t forget to look for waterproof gloves as well. Mittens are great but gloves will let your child get out there and play! Of course, warm hats, boots, scarves and earmuffs are also essential!

Now, here is a quick tip for you! Sierra Trading Post is a great place to pick up winter gear for your whole family! Back To School Routines: Make This Your Best Year Yet!

School is in full swing now which means we are all getting back on a routine. There are only 24 hours in a day, but sometimes, well, most of the time I have about 36 hours worth of things I would like to get done. And it all starts with the morning.

We’ve all had one of those mornings. Where you wake up late, can’t find something, remember something last minute….you know, it’s just off. Being off your morning can really effect the rest of your day. That’s why it’s so important to build a great morning routine. Start your morning off right with a great back to school routine.

school routines

So we asked….

What are your best tips for back to school morning routines?

Jenni-Eaves1-213x300

“Honestly, mornings around here started out pretty rough when school started. Now that we’re 3 weeks in, things are smooth sailing. Setting the coffee pot timer the night before, is the FIRST thing I do! We also have clothes and backpacks laid out the night before. On the weekends, I use gallon sized bags to divy up lunch items for the days of the week. That way, all I have to do is grab the bag and put everything inside Eli’s lunchbox. It only takes a second, vs. 5 extra minutes out of the morning. Another thing I use that really helps us stick to our routine is cellphone timers. I have a timer for everything…and when the timer goes off, we do that task. Wash face and hands, brush teeth, get dressed, eat breakfast (and take our vitamins), grab backpack, say our morning prayer, watch for the bus. Works like a charm! Sounds a little OCD, right?! But hey — we get out the door on time and with less drama, each and every morning!! Plus, Eli thinks it’s fun and he likes to beat his time for each task. He looks at it as sort of a challenge!!”

– Jenni is the mom of one and the author of Sweet Pennies From Heaven. A hearth and homewebsite, Sweet Pennies From Heaven focuses on recipes, crafts and creating a comfortable home. Follow her on Twitter here!

“Mornings are always busy! This year, we have lots of new things to experience: we’re in a new city, a new house and a new school district. Plus, Mike is no longer working outside the home. I feel like we’re starting our school morning routines from scratch. Thankfully, some of our usual habits will continue to serve us well. In the evening, I have Sam help me prep his backpack and clothes for the next day — this makes our morning so much easier! Once we’re up and around, I make his lunch while he eats breakfast. We follow breakfast with vitamins and a good teeth brushing. After a few minutes of reading and cuddles together, it’s time for out the door. I love the fall and I’m excited that back to school season is finally here!”

Stephanie is the mom to Sam and the author of Spaceships and Laser Beams. If you ever need party ideas her site is the place to visit! Specializing in all things boy, it’s full of inspiration!Follow her on Twitter here!

Amanda-626x1024

“Mornings for us are pretty different than they were last year! This year we are homeschooling so we have eliminated a lot of the rush which feels so amazing! I’m all for calm and less stress! One change that I have added to my routine is that I spend a few minutes (usually only 5-7) doing some yoga. It may sound silly or that those few minutes can’t really make a difference, but they do! It gives me a few minutes to just wake up, stretch and get ready. I’ve also stopped the habit of waking up, grabbing my phone and checking my inbox in bed. Before, I was starting my day before I could even fully open my eyes! Then it’s breakfast, vitamins and beginning to get ready. Small, simple changes have helped make our mornings not only calmer but so much more enjoyable. And when you start your mornings off enjoyable it’s much easier to have an awesome day!”

One thing that we all have in common is the fact that vitamins play an important part of our routines. Have you heard of SmartyPants vitamins? They are my absolute favorite! Why?

  2. They are delicious. Like super good!

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

I’ve never posted anything like this on here before, but this has been so heavy on my heart for a long time.

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

Stop calling my son autistic.

His name is Joshua. He is a tall, handsome, smart, funny, creative young man. Why do people think that they need to label him? I hate labels. You would never introduce someone and say:

  • This is my friend. She’s poor.
  • This is my brother. He’s gay.
  • This is my sister. She’s a single mom.
  • This is my cousin. He’s Hispanic.
  • This is my aunt. She’s ‘normal’.

Why do people think they need to label themselves or their children because of a disability? (And side note: I hate the word disability. Autism doesn’t hold us back. We do things a little differently sometimes, but we sure are not held back!)

We have been in the waiting room at the doctor before and a child will start pacing back and forth across the room. Their mother will look at me and say “Sorry, he has Autism.” as she then turns to her child to come sit down and get out of the way.

Listen, you don’t have to apologize to me. You don’t have to justify your child by explaining to me that he is different. I get it. But even if I didn’t. You don’t need to. I know that our culture judges parents, particularly mothers relentlessly. But that’s a whole different rant for a different post.

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

And if you do know my son has Autism, here are a few things to make sure you never, ever do.

  • Don’t tell us, “Oh, he doesn’t look like he has Autism.” “You can barely tell he is autistic.”
  • Don’t talk louder…or slower. Don’t change your vocabulary to make it ‘simpler’. (Honestly, my child is probably smarter than you and I combined.)
  • Don’t compare him to your neighbor’s sister’s second cousin who has a child who is on the spectrum.
  • You don’t need to stare.
  • When you hear him speak or if you hear me talking about him don’t say “Wow. His autism makes him so smart!” Why can’t he be smart just because he’s smart? Why are you still differentiating him? Is he all of a sudden more or less smart? No. Did his autism make him smart? No. He’s smart because of himself. He reads constantly. He asks millions of what if questions. He builds things. He is smart because he has figured things out. He did that. Not his autism.
  • This should go without saying, but we are not here for you to make yourself feel better. We are not here for you to pity, baby or use as a service project.
  • And so help me if you think it is appropriate to pull out your phone and record a video. “Aww look. He’s able to be in the choir.” “Look at that autistic boy at the concert.” “This autistic man has a job.” “How sweet. That autistic girl went to prom.” Gee. Who would have ever thought. People with autism are human beings who like to do the same things that everyone else likes to do. They are people who are able to do everyday things when people stop assuming and give them the chance; when they stop defining them by their disability. Really, it’s the world who is doing the disabling.

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

While I appreciate the fact that more people are aware about things like Autism, they aren’t understanding it sometimes. Just because someone has Autism doesn’t mean you have to treat them like they have Autism. Unfortunately, most people that we have experienced in this journey fall into two categories: they are jerks. Or they try. Very seldom do we meet people who don’t look at the disability and just see the person. To those of you that do, thank you. Please know that you are so special to us.

We appreciate those who try, we really do! But here is a fact for you to keep in mind. Severe depression in adolescence with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is 37% compared to 5% of ‘normal’ adolescence. Some studies reveal that those numbers of severely depressed actually may be as high as 50%. But not just depression, teens with ASD and depression are more apt to have suicidal thoughts. And even scarier – ASD individuals are 40-50% more likely to attempt suicide than depressed individuals without Autism. It’s actually a silent epidemic. And one that needs to be talked about – without stigma.

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

Junior high was rough for us. Junior high is rough for everyone. But for us it wasn’t just the bullies who were bringing Joshua down. It was also the people that were trying. Everyday, children and teachers alike made him feel inadequate and like he couldn’t do anything that ‘normal’ children could do. And they did it with the best of intentions. This isn’t a post to make them feel bad or to blame them by any means. But instead, to bring awareness.

We are not ashamed by Joshua’s Autism. We embrace it. I tell him that his Autism makes it impossible to be normal. Think about it. If someone tells you “Wow. You are so normal.” It’s not a positive thing. Instead, we strive to be told we are things like talented, smart, creative. Everyone else is working to get out of the ‘normal box’. Joshua’s mind lets him surpass the normal box and go on to extraordinary. We have nothing to be ashamed about. Autism does not define us. Autism does not make us. Autism is nothing but a label.

You don’t find me wearing the Autism Mom t-shirt not because I’m embarrassed. But because to me, it doesn’t matter. I am work so hard to not let my son be labeled by others and for him not to label himself. So for us, I can’t label him. He’s not my autistic son. He’s simply my son. And I love him.

We can all be friends.

We are all the same.

We are not defined by labels.

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

So please, stop labeling my child. He is not an autistic child. He is just a child.

Must Have Carry On Items

One of my favorite things to do is to travel. I love going to new places. I love revisiting some old favorites. I love seeing new things, discovering new adventures and seeing old friends. However, with that being said, I do not like to pack for traveling! I always seem to forget something, my stuff gets all wrinkled, I take way too much or even worse, I leave something behind.

carry on

One thing I’ve seemed to master over the years is my carry on bag. (Small steps right?) I admit, it’s gotten easier to pack my carry on (or my ‘grab bag’ as we call it for car rides!) the older Joshua has become. But I was curious, what are your must have carry on items? So, we asked the Moms from Moms Check In!

What’s in your carry on bag?

I do a fair amount of traveling, so over the years, I have perfected my carry on must haves. These are the items that I never leave home without when traveling and I always keep with me.

wallet + all id/credit/debit

medicine

laptop

earbuds (for their tvs)

water + healthy snack (because airlines have restricted what they serve)

jacket or lightweight blanket (it can get cold)

1 change of clothes

Jenni-Eaves1-213x300

I haven’t traveled a ton, but I have traveled enough to know what are must have items in my carry on.

I always have…

a small cross body bag with wallet, cash, debit card and ID

iPad with earbuds

allergy/sinus medication/sudafed (for my ears)

extra set of clothing

gum/mints/cough drops

My carry on bag has changed a bit over the years from when I would travel with an infant and then a toddler. Now that my son is older, I get to pack a little lighter.

My must haves include:

A book to read

Gum

A snack (my son is in the won’t-ever-stop-eating-because-he’s-a-bottomless-pit phase)

Portable charger for my phone (and one that will fit the iPad or his DS)

Noise canceling headphones (perfect to listen to music or just to wear if you have a noisy flight and want to nap!)

Amanda is the mom to Joshua and owns It’s a Fabulous Life. If you are looking for a one stop place for all things mom, It’s a Fabulous Life is it! Full of recipes, fashion, DIY projects, recipes and parenting articles it’s the place for all of Mom’s favorites to come together! Follow her on Twitter here!

While all of our carry on bags differ a little bit, we all have one thing in common – we all pack a travel size bottle of Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus. This stuff is amazing at getting rid of any static cling, smoothing out wrinkles (so you don’t look like you have been traveling all day!) and it has a fresh clean scent. Whether you are driving to Grandma’s for a long holiday weekend or hopping on the plane for a week in the Caribbean (I’m so jealous…), this little bottle is an absolute must! (Trust me and almost 1,000 people who have submitted their reviews online. Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus is amazing!)

Join us next Thursday, December 17 from 1-2 PM (Eastern) for the #DontPackWrinkles Twitter Party! We will be talking travel and giving away travel packs + Target gift cards! Be sure to RSVP here!

RSVP For the #DontPackWrinkles Twitter Party

This week on Moms Check In we are partnering with Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus to talk all about travel!

carry on

Whether you are packing for vacations or even just a weekend getaway you always end up with two bags. Your suitcase filled with all of your clothes and shoes and a carry on bag (or if you are in the car, a bag within reach!) What are your must items for your carry on bag? You can see what our Moms pack in their bag here!

While packing your bags there is one thing that you can’t forget – Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus! While you have a bottle at home in your laundry room, the travel-size bottle makes it SUPER handy to keep in your car and to pack in your bag while traveling!

Why do you need to have a bottle of Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus? Clothes get all wrinkly not only in your suitcase, but after sitting on the plane or in the car for a long trip! A quick spray and a tug has you looking your best! Plus, if you are battling static a little bit of Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus can make all the difference. Oh and did I mention that it smells good?

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to iron. And I like to iron even less while I’m on vacation. The travel size Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus is my traveling liquid gold. Win for Mom!
