What Winter Clothes Kids Really Need

Happy Halloween! I hope everyone is having a fun and safe Halloween tonight! You know what comes after Halloween? The very official start of cold weather. That’s right. Super official. It’s time to go from pretty fall weather to I-Don’t-Want-To-Get-Out-From-Under-The-Covers cold. Also, a very official weather term.

How To Layer Your Child's Clothes For Winter

But what winter clothes do kids really need to keep them warm while they are busy building snowmen or sledding? (Besides hot cocoa of course!)

How To Layer Your Child's Clothes For WinterHow To Layer Your Child's Clothes For Winter

Start With A Base Layer

Ever since I was little, during cold weather we were told to “layer, layer, layer.” But we didn’t layer correctly! Cotton long sleeve shirts definitely were a layer but not one that really works to keep you warm. Choose a starting layer that has a moisture management technology. Different brands call this type of fabric different things such as ClimaSense or Dri-fit. These fabrics help to regulate your temperature and keep you dry. Playing in the snow is hard work! Even though it may be cold, kids (and adults) still sweat. This should be your go-to for your base layer!

Your Middle Layer

Next layer is the middle layer. You will want to look for materials like wool, down or fleece. This layer is to help insulate you. Sweaters, sweatshirts and sweatpants are all a great option!

The Outer Layer

Here is the layer you probably pay the most attention to – the outer layer! Look for waterproof gear so a little melted snow won’t hurt! Another thing that you want to pay attention to is how comfortable the coat is. You don’t want your child to not be able to move in it! Also, many brands will put right on their tags what temperatures their gear is meant to withstand.

Snow pants are a must have if your child is planning on playing out in the snow. Whether they are sledding or making snow angels, while jeans are a great, thick material they are no good in the snow! There is nothing worse than being cold and wet!

Don’t forget to look for waterproof gloves as well. Mittens are great but gloves will let your child get out there and play! Of course, warm hats, boots, scarves and earmuffs are also essential!

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

I’ve never posted anything like this on here before, but this has been so heavy on my heart for a long time.

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

Stop calling my son autistic.

His name is Joshua. He is a tall, handsome, smart, funny, creative young man. Why do people think that they need to label him? I hate labels. You would never introduce someone and say:

  • This is my friend. She’s poor.
  • This is my brother. He’s gay.
  • This is my sister. She’s a single mom.
  • This is my cousin. He’s Hispanic.
  • This is my aunt. She’s ‘normal’.

Why do people think they need to label themselves or their children because of a disability? (And side note: I hate the word disability. Autism doesn’t hold us back. We do things a little differently sometimes, but we sure are not held back!)

We have been in the waiting room at the doctor before and a child will start pacing back and forth across the room. Their mother will look at me and say “Sorry, he has Autism.” as she then turns to her child to come sit down and get out of the way.

Listen, you don’t have to apologize to me. You don’t have to justify your child by explaining to me that he is different. I get it. But even if I didn’t. You don’t need to. I know that our culture judges parents, particularly mothers relentlessly. But that’s a whole different rant for a different post.

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

And if you do know my son has Autism, here are a few things to make sure you never, ever do.

  • Don’t tell us, “Oh, he doesn’t look like he has Autism.” “You can barely tell he is autistic.”
  • Don’t talk louder…or slower. Don’t change your vocabulary to make it ‘simpler’. (Honestly, my child is probably smarter than you and I combined.)
  • Don’t compare him to your neighbor’s sister’s second cousin who has a child who is on the spectrum.
  • You don’t need to stare.
  • When you hear him speak or if you hear me talking about him don’t say “Wow. His autism makes him so smart!” Why can’t he be smart just because he’s smart? Why are you still differentiating him? Is he all of a sudden more or less smart? No. Did his autism make him smart? No. He’s smart because of himself. He reads constantly. He asks millions of what if questions. He builds things. He is smart because he has figured things out. He did that. Not his autism.
  • This should go without saying, but we are not here for you to make yourself feel better. We are not here for you to pity, baby or use as a service project.
  • And so help me if you think it is appropriate to pull out your phone and record a video. “Aww look. He’s able to be in the choir.” “Look at that autistic boy at the concert.” “This autistic man has a job.” “How sweet. That autistic girl went to prom.” Gee. Who would have ever thought. People with autism are human beings who like to do the same things that everyone else likes to do. They are people who are able to do everyday things when people stop assuming and give them the chance; when they stop defining them by their disability. Really, it’s the world who is doing the disabling.

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

While I appreciate the fact that more people are aware about things like Autism, they aren’t understanding it sometimes. Just because someone has Autism doesn’t mean you have to treat them like they have Autism. Unfortunately, most people that we have experienced in this journey fall into two categories: they are jerks. Or they try. Very seldom do we meet people who don’t look at the disability and just see the person. To those of you that do, thank you. Please know that you are so special to us.

We appreciate those who try, we really do! But here is a fact for you to keep in mind. Severe depression in adolescence with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is 37% compared to 5% of ‘normal’ adolescence. Some studies reveal that those numbers of severely depressed actually may be as high as 50%. But not just depression, teens with ASD and depression are more apt to have suicidal thoughts. And even scarier – ASD individuals are 40-50% more likely to attempt suicide than depressed individuals without Autism. It’s actually a silent epidemic. And one that needs to be talked about – without stigma.

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

Junior high was rough for us. Junior high is rough for everyone. But for us it wasn’t just the bullies who were bringing Joshua down. It was also the people that were trying. Everyday, children and teachers alike made him feel inadequate and like he couldn’t do anything that ‘normal’ children could do. And they did it with the best of intentions. This isn’t a post to make them feel bad or to blame them by any means. But instead, to bring awareness.

We are not ashamed by Joshua’s Autism. We embrace it. I tell him that his Autism makes it impossible to be normal. Think about it. If someone tells you “Wow. You are so normal.” It’s not a positive thing. Instead, we strive to be told we are things like talented, smart, creative. Everyone else is working to get out of the ‘normal box’. Joshua’s mind lets him surpass the normal box and go on to extraordinary. We have nothing to be ashamed about. Autism does not define us. Autism does not make us. Autism is nothing but a label.

You don’t find me wearing the Autism Mom t-shirt not because I’m embarrassed. But because to me, it doesn’t matter. I am work so hard to not let my son be labeled by others and for him not to label himself. So for us, I can’t label him. He’s not my autistic son. He’s simply my son. And I love him.

We can all be friends.

We are all the same.

We are not defined by labels.

Stop Calling My Son Autistic

So please, stop labeling my child. He is not an autistic child. He is just a child.

10 Ways To Keep Kids Entertained While They Are Sick

I always say that there is nothing worse than a sick kiddo. Your heart just breaks for them. But I lied. There IS something worse. A bored, sick kiddo. That’s a double whammy. They don’t feel good, are tired of laying in bed and you have to be the bad guy of saying things like “No, we can’t go outside.” or “Stop running around. Why don’t you come sit on the couch?”

????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Here is a list of kid and mom approved activities to do the next time your child gets sick. Obviously napping is one of the best things to do while fighting a cold, but it’s not always practical. (Although, I could always go for a nap!) But these activities are nice and calm, making it easy to rest while enjoying them.

Tip: Pick up a TV tray to make playing in bed or on the couch easier. They are inexpensive and come in handy for sick days or even for taking on car trips!

  • Card games or dice games are always fun! For young kids play Go Fish or Matches and for a little bit older children you can play Crazy 8’s, Farkle or Yahtzee.
  • Put together a puzzle.
  • Read a new book.
  • Download a new game app on your tablet.
  • Draw, color or paint with water colors.
  • Watch a new movie – or just a favorite! You can rent or buy movies directly on Amazon and stream them to your device or rent one at your local Redbox.
  • Play with play dough! You can even add a few drops of essential oils in them. Lavender for calming, eucalyptus to help clear the airways, or thieves or Frankincense can help with respiratory support.
  • Legos
  • Play in the tub. Sometimes a bath can help make you feel better. Let the kids take some toys in the tub, relax and play!
  • Get crafty. Decorate the tissue box. Blowing your nose is more fun when you are grabbing tissues from a personalized masterpiece.

As parents, when our kids are sick we want to do anything and everything in our power to help them. And that includes giving them the right medicines. I’m a HUGE fan of Maty’s all natural products. They aren’t just for kids either! Maty’s has lines specifically for children, but they also make products that we can all enjoy! I actually get excited about giving them to my family because they are just absolutely loaded with good stuff.

matys

I’ll be honest, I’m completely new to Maty’s. I’m so glad that my friend Jenni introduced them to me! I’m a huge believer in the power of good food and what natural products can do for you.

Now, I know that this is the cough syrup, but check out all of this good stuff in it! All of these have been used for year and years and years to keep healthy and fight off colds. They’ve been used for this long, because they work! 🙂 I’ve actually been adding a spoonful to my hot tea lately, just for an extra dose of goodness.

Joshua had a cough not too long ago and he used this cough medicine. We were really happy with how well it worked!

Seriously. Everything about this label made me super happy. Like get up and dance happy.

I mean how could you not want to use these products?

You can see the full line of all of Maty’s products here! I can’t wait to add more to our collection!

How To Make Veggies Fun For Kids

How To Make Veggies Fun

When it comes to snacks and packing lunches for our kids there are so many options! But sometimes when we offer up vegetables instead of treats it is met with grumbles or sighs of disappointment. However creating healthy habits early is really so important. And if that means making vegetables fun to help kids reach for them (and realize “Hey, this is really yummy!”) then I am all for it!

Here is a quick and easy way to kick the plain ol’ celery sticks up a notch in the fun department by creating Celery Friends!

How To Make Veggies Fun

First wash your celery and cut in half. Spread with peanut butter. (If you need to make them nut free try Sunbutter!)

How To Make Veggies Fun

How To Make Veggies Fun

These candy eyes, mustaches, teeth and lips can make just about anything fun!

How To Make Veggies Fun

Use them to make silly faces in your peanut butter.

Other Ideas:

You can really use these in so many ways to make kid’s food fun.

  • Make a face in a dish of hummus and pack with carrot sticks.
  • Add eyes to cherry tomatoes and put in a side salad.
  • Stick funny faces on apples or bananas.

Let children make their own funny faces!

If you are packing a lunch for your child, spread the peanut butter (or SunButter) on your child’s celery sticks. Fill a small container with the eyes and mouths. Wait for your child to come home and tell you how their lunch was the talk of the lunch table! Kids think it’s so much fun to make funny faces with their food. And it’s so much more fun to play with your food before you eat it. Getting your kids to not only eat their veggies but to associate them with positive thoughts? That’s a mom win!

Back To School Tips You Need To Know

Great back to school ideas

Joshua just started school last week. When he started kindergarten I was such a mess – crying, blubbering, worrying. I had to stop at the gas station on the way home. I was so preoccupied thinking of my baby growing up I almost drove off with the pump still in my car! (This is what we call a hot mess….)

Now he’s starting junior high and I cried again. Junior high is full of lockers, changing classes, and independence. I’ve learned quite a few back to school tips and tricks over the years. I can’t say watching them grow up gets easier, but it does make you feel proud!

Here are some of our best back to school tips!

We are finishing our final days of summer, enjoying all the time we can together. Sam is definitely excited for school to begin. We’ve talked a lot about being back at school and getting back in our regular routine. I think talking a lot before back to school helps calm nerves. Talk about their apprehensions to help calm them down plus share positive ideas about what to look forward to. We’re also starting to get in our normal bedtime routine, which I know helps his body to adjust. Cheers to a great school year ahead!

It’s back to school time for us too! We’ve been back for 2 weeks now and I think we’re settling in nicely. My back to school tips are starting 2 weeks before school starts to begin your routine. Bathtime, picking out clothes, going to bed early, etc. That way when school DOES start, it’s not a shock all at once. Another tip is start packing in plenty of Vitamin C before school starts because, believe me, kids are germy! We’re 2 weeks in and little man has already caught a cold bug. Pack some anti-bac wipes in their lunchbox or backpack to use before lunch too.

Back to school can be overwhelming! Josh just started Jr. High and it means lockers, changing classes and a whole lot of school supplies. We got our schedules on back to school night, but I could tell he was still anxious. I called the school just to see if we could stop in, practice his locker combination, drop off all of his supplies and do a walk through a couple of times finding each of his class. If you have a child who seems a little anxious – just ask! Being prepared made him (and myself!) feel so much more confident on the first day of school.

Best Potty Training Tips

Best Potty Training Tips

Potty training is the first right of passage that every child and parent goes through. It can be tough, but in the end it’s so rewarding. Joshua wasn’t potty trained until he was almost 4! Every time I would go to the store I would tell him “I am not buying Pull-Ups anymore. This is the last bag.” And the next week I would be back. He wanted nothing to do with the potty. He was scared. I was frustrated. The preschool was even telling me that he couldn’t move up into the 4 year old class until he was potty trained. I had no idea what to do. I felt like we had tried everything.

Then, one morning while I was getting him ready for preschool he said “I want to wear underwear to school.” Eek! Progress! We had worn underwear over his Pull-Up lots of times, but this was the first time he had asked. When I got out a new Pull-Up to put on him, he said “No, underwear.” I about jumped out of my skin! I was so excited. He wanted to ditch the diaper!

We went to school and I told the teacher so she could keep an eye out and to expect an accident. He had never gone potty at school before. When I picked him up that afternoon he was still in the same clothes. She said he had gone all day long. What?! That night when we got ready for bed he was still accident free and when I went to put a Pull-Up on him for bed he said “No, mom.” I thought, ok…. and was expecting a middle of the night wake up call. But to my surprise, the next morning he was dry.

After he chose to wear underwear, he never had an accident. Ever. (Well, except when he couldn’t find a bathroom!) I was so happy! (Although part of me was thinking “You stinker! You could do it the whole time!”) He was happy.

So while potty training can be hard, remember each child is different. But that moment of “getting it” is so worth it!

Here are some potty training tips!

“While potty training Sam, we learned that patience was key. Rushing it or pushing Sam beyond his comfort level just didn’t work for us. By allowing him to go at his own pace, we were able to encourage him to check out the potty and then become comfortable using it. Once he felt comfortable, we were able to establish a routine and reward system that led us to success!”

Jenni-Eaves1-213x300

“Potty training can be so difficult, especially for boys. Our best tip is to have a rewards system in place, whether it’s stickers, candy, or money! Also, being consistent is key. One thing that really worked for us was buying character underwear. Pick a pack or two of their favorite characters and they’ll wanna be BIG kids then!!”

I have to say patience is the best thing you can have when potty training. My son was definitely on his own time when it came to potty training. When he decided he was ready and comfortable, potty training was a breeze. Hang in there Moms! It will come!”

Fresh Peach Lemonade Recipe

Fresh Peach Lemonade Recipe

Summer and lemonade go together like peanut butter and jelly. Cool, refreshing and delicious, I definitely don’t complain when the kid’s lemonade stands start to line our street.

This year we participated in Lemonade Day for Indianapolis. Lemonade Day is a really awesome organization that helps to teach kids about entrepreneur skills and running their own business. Kids are in charge of their own business and can even create letters or movies to get investors to help with their start up costs.

Joshua’s lemonade stand was called Pups For Cups. While kids are in charge of how they spend their money that they raise in their lemonade stand, Josh wanted to donate his money to the animal rescue that we got our dog Lincoln from. Lemonade Day is a program that is available in many cities across the country! I really encourage you to check it out for your kids for next year! Indianapolis makes Lemonade Day a big deal! Our city created so many wonderful events to encourage the kids!

Josh has taken his lemonade stand to the next level. He really wanted to raise as much money as he could for Bright Hope Pet Rescue. He’s sold t-shirts and while Lemonade Day is over, he still has been selling! One of Joshua’s secrets is flavored lemonades. This fresh peach lemonade is a top seller!

You will need:

6 Cups of Rice Krispie cereal

1 Bag of marshmallows

3 Tablespoons butter

White Chocolate

Hershey Drops

A tube of black cake decorating gel.

To make the Rice Krispie Treats, simply melt the bag of marshmallows and better.

In a large bowl, add cereal and once melted, pour the marshmallow butter mix in. Stir well, evenly coating.

Spray a baking dish with nonstick spray and add the Rice Krispie mix in. Let it sit and cool.

Using a cup or biscuit cutter, cut out circles. Like cookie dough, once you can no longer get anymore shapes out, roll up the mix and flatten it out again!

(Tip you want your circles to be well packed and tight. Otherwise the chocolate will cause them to pull apart.)

Melt the chocolate according to the package instructions. Spoon white chocolate on one side of the treat.

Add 2 Hershey Drop eyes. Place on a plate. Once your treats are coated in chocolate, place in the refrigerator or freezer just until the chocolate hardens.

Using the black cake decorating gel, draw a line connecting the two eyes.
