Mary Poppins Party Idea – Spoonful of Sugar Cake Pops

Mary Poppins Party Idea – A Spoonful of Sugar Cake Pops

If you were to ever ask me what my favorite movie was, I would have to tell you that there were actually two. In no particular order, I would have to tell you Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast. I thought last year, with Beauty and the Beast being recreated that dreams were coming true.

And then.

Then, I got the news that so was Mary Poppins!! Wait, what?!?

In the sequel, which arrives in theaters this Christmas, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS stars Emily Blunt as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure; Lin-Manuel Miranda as her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London; Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks; Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks; and Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen; with Colin Firth as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins; and Meryl Streep as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy.

The film also introduces three new Banks’ children played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson. Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke is Mr. Dawes Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.

Are you excited yet?!

I may have been a little excited because the other day I got in the kitchen to whip up a Mary Poppins style dessert for our kids as we settled down to watch the original. What better for a dessert than a spoonful of sugar?

Now, listen. Dustin and I own our own business. We have five kids. Some days I’m doing amazing to just get kids showered, off to school and fed for the day. Forget about dessert. So when I say these are easy to make. I mean, heck, even I can make them.

You Will Need

Mix your cake mix according to your package instructions.

Bake the cake and let it cool completely. In a large bowl, crumble the cake.

Add in the frosting. I use a traditional creamy buttercream frosting. I haven’t tried making it with the whipped frosting, so I can’t tell you how it affects the texture. Mix together thoroughly.

Lay a piece of wax paper on a cookie sheet. Roll small cake balls and place on your sheet. These cake pops are going to have to be a smaller pop in order to fit into your spoon. Place the sheet in the freezer for about 20 minutes until they are set.

(Hint: If your cake mix is hard to roll, place the bowl in the freezer for a few minutes!)

In a small bowl, melt the candy melts according to the package directions. Dip one of your cake pops into the white candy coating.

You want it to be evenly coated, but not dripping.

Add the sugar sprinkles and place back on the cookie sheet.

In your plastic spoon, place a drop of the white candy coating and before it hardens, place your cake pop. Put the spoons on your baking sheet and freeze for a few minutes until it can set. (It won’t take long!)

Sweet. Fun. Spoonfuls of sugar. Literally!

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Cupcake Recipe

That perfect balance of sweet and salty is one of my favorite flavor combinations. When I take Joshua to the movies and they ask you if you want popcorn or candy, we choose both. Because nothing is better than dumping your chocolate candy into your movie theater popcorn. (Reese’s Pieces + popcorn = amazing….trust me!)

So why shouldn’t that blend of awesome goodness get their own cupcake? There is no reason why! So I’m excited to give you the recipe for these amazing chocolate covered pretzel cupcakes. And yes, they taste as good as they look!

Marvel Avengers Birthday Idea: Hulk Cupcakes

With the new Marvel Avengers: Age of Ultron movie that just came out, everything in my house is all about Captain America, Iron Man, and Joshua’s personal favorite, The Hulk!

To celebrate this awesome movie we just had to create some Hulk cupcakes! (HULK SMASH!) These are the perfect treat to serve at your child’s next birthday party. And trust me, while they look amazing, you can totally do this! Everyone will be super impressed and get a kick out of the totally cool cupcakes.

The Supplies:

Now, if you have never used fondant before don’t be intimidated! Think of it as clay or play-doh. And we are going to break up the Hulk’s fist in really easy basic shapes that I promise, you can do! (Remember rolling snakes in elementary school with the clay? Yes? Well, then I think you are going to be a fondant pro!)

1. Preheat your oven and prepare your cake mix according to the directions on the box. Once the cake batter is prepared add a few globs of the icing color and mix well.

2. Bake according to the box directions in your purple cupcake liners. Once baked, remove from the cupcake pan and allow to cool on a wire rack.

3. In a bowl, combine your frosting and add icing color to achieve the perfect purple color. (I added the same amount that I added to the cake mix to keep it a consistent color.) Frost your cupcakes and set aside.

4. Begin working on your Hulk fists by removing the fondant from the package and kneading it until it begins to soften. Then create a round ball, flattening it just a bit. This will serve as knuckle part of the fist.

5. Your next piece is going to be the Hulk’s wrist area. It should be a cylinder shape.

6. Alright, remember rolling those snake shapes? We are going to do that again! Take small pieces of fondant and roll them in your hands until you have 5 matching pieces. These will be the fingers.

7. You are totally rocking this! At this point you should have all of the pieces as seen in the photo above.

8. It’s time to start assembly. Place the 4 fingers on the round ball shape piece that you made in step 4. Gently apply pressure to the backside of the fingers to get the pieces to mold together.

9. Then add the thumb to the side of the fist as shown.

10. You can add the details of the fist by using a craft stick or your finger. Add nail beds, lines of the skin, etc.

11. Add 2 toothpicks into the wrist piece you made in step 5. This will help keep the fist together and provide some extra stability when placed into the cupcakes.

12. Add the top part of the fist onto the other end of the toothpicks.

13. You did it! Your fist is complete! Simply push into the tops of your cupcakes.

Ta da! Hulk fist cupcakes!

Easy Birthday Cake Decorating Idea: Make An Anti-Gravity Cake

Last week my baby turned 12. EEK.

Twelve.

Oh.my.gosh.

Just about the only thing that I was sure of about this whole birthday thing was the cake. A while ago (a long while ago) I saw on Pinterest anti-gravity cakes.

Aren’t those amazing? While they are totally out of my league, I knew I wanted to create an anti-gravity cake for Josh for his birthday.

I think it came out pretty cool, if I do say so myself. And it was really easy!

And Josh loved it.

You will need:

  • A cake (I purchased one from the store. No need to make this harder than it has to be after all!)
  • Icing
  • A marshmallow
  • Candy (I used Hershey bars and M&M’s – but use your favorite!)
  • A wooden skewer

The longest part of the cake decorating was probably unwrapping the candy bars!

Add a bit of icing to the back of the candy bar and stick it to the perimeter of the cake.

Leave an opening on the cake for the candy to ‘fall out’.

If there are any details on the cake that you don’t want, just use a knife and scrape it off. Our cake had flowers and those weren’t really 12-year-old-boy-cool.

Patched with a little frosting and we were good as new.

Empty out the bag of candy. It’s important to get a bag that has a resealable zipper. I used two wooden skewers and put a marshmallow on one end to hold them together. Then, stick the marshmallow end in the empty candy bag, seal it up and push the other end on the cake. (The bag in this picture ended up being too heavy so I switched it for a lighter bag.)

Then ice the skewer on the areas you can see and stick candy to it. This will be your ”candy waterfall”.

Create a path of candy that cascades out of the opening you made on the front of the cake.

Ta da! Make a wish! This cake is sure to be a hit! Just be prepared for family and friends to start asking you to make cakes for them too!
