Freezer Friendly Calzones: A Cento Review
Everyone has a few easy go to recipes that they like to have on hand and for us, calzones are it.
Beyond easy to make? Check.
Perfect for the freezer? Check.
Great to throw in lunchboxes? Check.
Quick and easy snack? Check.
A grab and go dinner? Check.
I can whip up a batch of these in no time. Inexpensive to make and so delicious. For me – it’s all about the sauce. Which is why I use Cento products in our sauce. Having a homemade, yummy sauce is the perfect starting point.
Now while I use a homemade sauce, I will admit I cheat on the dough. I use the pre-made, thin crust pizza dough. You can find it over with the crescent rolls, biscuits and cookies. I get 3 big calzones per crust. But you can obviously easily whip up your own pizza crust as well!
The secret to the sauce is simple. Cento! You have to have high quality ingredients. I used to think that Cento just had tomatoes, but they have so many different products including olive oil, stocks, beans, and my newest, most favorite item: vegetable paste.
3 tbsp
vegetable paste
1 tbsp
extra virgin olive oil
15 oz
canned tomato sauce
15 oz
crushed tomatoes
12 oz
tomato paste
1 tbsp
Italian seasoning
1 tbsp
dried Oregano
1-2 tsp
crushed fennel seed
1 tsp
onion powder
1 tsp
garlic powder
1/2 tsp
salt
1 tsp
dried basil-
sugar to your preference
Servings:
- In a large pot, begin with the vegetable paste and extra virgin olive oil. Vegetable paste is a mix of tomato, carrots, onion and celery. Usually I chop up a quick mirepoux, but this saves time by having it already done.
- Add the tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Mix well.
- Add the remaining ingredients and stir. The sugar is up to your own personal preference. You don’t have to add it, but I like a sweeter sauce.
- Bring the sauce to a boil and then cover and reduce.
- Let the sauce simmer for one hour, stirring occasionally.
- Preheat the oven as instructed on your premade pizza dough.
- Unroll the dough onto a prepared pan. Cut into thirds.
- Spoon pizza sauce into the center of the dough and fill with your favorite toppings.
- Fold over each side of the dough to cover. Using a fork, press the edges shut and poke a few holes in the top of the dough.
- Cook as instructed from the dough instructions.
- To serve: Top with a spoonful of pizza sauce.
To freeze: Allow to cool and place in a freezer bag or vacuum seal shut.
When I pack lunches for Josh with a calzone it’s always a surprise. He loves them! To carry the sauce, I just bought a few sauce containers. They work perfectly. And we actually use them all the time!
Cento has graciously decided to give away a huge prize pack full of products to one reader! Good luck!

Quick & Easy Chicken Cordon Bleu Pasta Bake
A few months ago I was able to travel to New York City to visit the Fancy Food Show. I am so excited not only share the fantastic foods that I was introduced to, but I’m even more excited to giveaway the foods so you can experience them too!
Today I’m sharing with you Saffron Road. Maybe you saw my picture of their yummy chickpeas on Instagram! They were so amazing. But it doesn’t stop with just chickpeas.
You can find a large variety of sauces that make dinner time a snap. If you are looking for an easy dinner, these simmer sauces are perfect!
Saffron Road also offers an extensive list of frozen meals. These are perfect for lunches at work or quick dinners. They also make some gluten free products, like these chicken nuggets. And they are REALLY good. They have quickly become my family’s favorite nuggets. We make school lunches with them, make kid friendly meals and adult approved dinners.
Dinners like this Chicken Cordon Bleu Pasta Bake. It’s so easy and so delicious. You won’t be sorry you tried it!

1 box
Saffron Road Chicken Nuggets
3/4 cup

Servings:
- Cook the chicken nuggets according to the box directions.
- While the chicken is cooking, boil water and cook the pasta also according to the box directions.

- Spray a casserole dish with non-stick spray. Line the dish with a layer of Swiss cheese.
- Pour the pasta mix into the casserole dish. Top with a layer of Swiss cheese and sprinkle breadcrumbs over the top.

What we love about summer cooking:
“We LOVE summertime at our house. We do a lot of outdoor entertaining in our backyard which means grilling, cool treats and lots of laughter with friends. Both Mike and I love to experiment with new recipes and flavor combinations, especially during the warm summer months.”

“We have a pretty big extended family and we have a ton of get togethers in the summertime. Lots of birthdays, and then of course there’s Father’s Day and the 4th of July. Always entertaining, playing games, swimming and eating good food! Summertime food for me means quick and easy (usually involving the grill!)”

“Summer for me is all about easy and fresh food. And also, if we can keep the oven turned off that’s an added bonus! So our slow cooker goes into overdrive. A typical summer meal might be some BBQ, corn on the cob (I do live in Indiana after all), fruit salad and some ice cream!”

Easy Dinner Idea: Meatball Stuffed Shells
What’s for dinner at your house this week? We are having this super easy dish to whip up. It’s simple to make, inexpensive and beyond delicious. This recipe uses frozen meatballs to make it quick and easy for even the busiest weeknight, but you can always make homemade meatballs if you wish.
Another awesome thing about this recipe is that it freezes really well! A batch of these are great to have on hand for lunches or just a quick to make dinner.
[Tweet “Best Easy Dinner #Recipe EVER -> Meatball Stuffed Shells #food #yum “]
1 box
jumbo shell pasta
1
egg
1/2 cup
Parmesan cheese
1 container
Ricotta Cheese
1 bag
frozen Italian meatballs
1 jar
Marinara sauce
2 cups
mozzarella cheese
Servings:
- Make pasta as directed on the box. Drain. Preheat oven to 375.
- Mix Ricotta cheese, 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese and 1 egg.
- Spread a layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of a baking dish.
- In each shell, add cheese mixture and a frozen meatball.
- Place in the baking dish.
- Cover with a layer of Marinara sauce.
- Top with mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese as well if desired.
- Bake for 45 minutes.
- Enjoy!
Note: If you would like to freeze the shells, simply pre-cook the shells, stuff and place on a cookie sheet until frozen. Then transfer to a Ziploc bag. This will allow you to take as many as you would like. You can also follow the recipe and make the shells in a disposable aluminum baking pan. Just don’t cook and instead place in the freezer. I like to cover the top with aluminum foil (over the lid) for an extra layer of protection in the freezer!

Better Than Olive Garden Spaghetti Sauce
One of my favorite dishes to make is pasta.
Y’all.
I love me some pasta.
Josh and I just moved a while ago and we live minutes away from Olive Garden. If there was is one thing I love almost as much as pasta it’s their bread sticks. I’ve only given in once to eating there for dinner. Even though I have to pass it four times a day, five times a week.
The struggle is real. Oh yes. It is.
So while we’ve only stopped in for dinner once, that hasn’t stopped me from thinking of it. So I headed to my kitchen to recreate that fantastic spaghetti sauce. And I think, not only did I do it, but I honestly think it’s better than the Olive Garden sauce!
You can get excited. I did! 🙂
(BONUS: Your house will smell amazing!)
3 28 oz cans
crushed tomatoes (I like the basil, oregano and garlic tomatoes. You can also use 12-15 fresh tomatoes peeled, chopped and blended in your food processor. If using fresh tomatoes you may need to use more herbs to fit your tasting.)
4 cloves
garlic
4 tbsp
dried basil
1 1/2 tsp
black pepper
2 tbsp
sugar (This takes out the bitterness. If you are using fresh or if you like a sweeter sauce you may want to add more sugar.)
2 tbsp
olive oil
1/3 cup
shredded parmesan romano cheese-
minced green peppers (optional)
Servings:
- Heat the olive oil in a 5+ qt. pot over medium heat, and add the chopped or pressed garlic.
- Heat for one to two minutes, making sure not to burn the garlic, then add all the tomatoes, black pepper, basil and sugar. Stirring often, bring to a low boil.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 2-3 hours stirring often.
- For the first half of the simmer time, do so with the pot uncovered, then cover.
- Add the cheese, stir in and simmer for an additional 5 minutes or so.
Don’t forget to pin!
If you are planning on storing your extra sauce you can either can the sauce or freeze it. These jars are my favorite for freezing things!

Easy Cheesy Chicken Parmesan Bake
I am always looking for easy dinners to make during the week. Even better if it makes enough to feed everyone and leave leftovers for lunch! This recipe comes together in no time and is really good. Like really good! Like so good that my family is asking me to make it again!
Not too long ago I volunteered at a Zaycon Fresh pick-up. I was there to pick up a case of their boneless skinless chicken breasts anyways so I was excited when they asked me to volunteer! Wait, let me back up for a second. Have you heard of Zaycon Fresh?
Zaycon Fresh has really awesome foods (mostly meats) like their famous boneless, skinless chicken breasts as well as ground beef, hickory smoked bacon, applewood smoked ham and more! Their products go from farm to you – skipping the stores completely saving you big money! They are fresh (never frozen!) and so good. This is our second order of chicken and I’m just as impressed with this one as I was the last! They are hormone free and 100% natural. They are pretty large and you won’t spend much time trimming fat because there isn’t much! Compared to the store it’s a no brainer! The quality is top notch and they are only $1.69/lb! (And you can sign up to volunteer like I did! If called you will be given $10/hour worked in credit off your next purchase. I was at the event for about an hour and a half.)
But now Zaycon Fresh is even better because they have partnered with Chicken Soup For the Soul! Did you know that Chicken Soup for the Soul has more than just books? I didn’t! But they do! BBQ sauces, broths, pasta sauces and meal builder sauces. I was so excited to get a package from them to test out a few of the products! They were awesome! I’m a new fan for sure!
But you are here for the Easy, Cheesy Chicken Parmesan Bake right? Well, here it is! Simple to make and great for the freezer to make ahead of time.
1 bag
frozen cheese ravioli
1 pound
Zaycon Fresh boneless skinless chicken breasts cut into bite size pieces
2 cups
mozzarella cheese shredded
1 jar
Chicken Soup for the Soul Marinara sauce
1/2 cup
Italian bread crumbs
1 tbsp
garlic powder
1 tbsp
basil
1 tbps
oregano
1/2 cup
Parmesan cheese
1 cup
Chicken Soup for the Soul chicken broth
1 cup
mushrooms sliced
Servings:
- In a hot skillet, add Chicken Soup for the Soul chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Add the chicken and cover stirring occasionally until just cooked through.
- In a bowl combine the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, oregano, garlic powder, and basil. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Remove the cooked chicken from the broth and roll in the breadcrumb mixture. Place on a greased baking pan. Broil for just a minute to crisp.
- In the skillet saute the mushrooms in the remaining chicken broth. Set aside.
- In a casserole dish, cover the bottom in a thin layer of marinara sauce. Layer the frozen ravioli on top of the marinara sauce.
- Next, layer chicken and mushrooms. Top with a layer of mozzarella cheese and sauce. Then repeat. (Ravioli, chicken, mushrooms, cheese and sauce).
- Finish your bake with a layer of ravioli, sauce and cheese. Bake for 45 minutes at 375 F. Put a cookie sheet underneath in case of any sauce bubbling over.
Serve with a side salad and breadsticks. Mmmm….this is seriously delicious!
Check out to see when and where Zaycon Fresh will be delivering in your area! They are one of my biggest tips for saving on meat and still getting excellent, high quality products!

Skinny Bacon, Chicken and Asparagus Penne
My favorite dishes all usually have one thing in common: pasta.
I love me some pasta.
Shells. Lasagna. Spaghetti.
But my favorite of all favorites has to be Alfredo.
You can get the jarred Alfredo sauce, but ehhhhhh. It’s not the same. You need homemade sauce. It’s creamy and cheesy and delicious. And luckily making homemade sauce only takes a few minutes to make. And even LUCKIER is that I have a lightened up version ready for you.
And it’s so delicious and awesome ….. you would never know!
Now, I will admit this recipe has a few steps, but nothing difficult. And the end result is SO worth it. It’s one of my favorite recipes to make and a dinner that is requested A LOT in our house!

1 pound
boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 tbsp
olive oil
1 tsp
basil
1/2 tsp
dried thyme
1/4 tsp
salt
1/4 tsp
pepper
12 ounces
penne pasta
1 pound
asparagus ends trimmed, steamed and cut into pieces
1 1/2 tbsp
butter
2 tbsp
all purpose flour
2 cloves
garlic minced
1 3/4 cup
milk
1/4 cup
heavy cream
3 ounce
Neufchatel cheese (light cream cheese) diced
1/3 cup
shredded Parmesan cheese
5 slices
bacon cooked and crumbled
Servings:
- Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. In a small bowl, stir together basil, oregano, thyme and 1/4 salt and pepper. Sprinkle half of the herb mixture evenly over tops of chicken. Add chicken to skillet, herbed side down, then add remaining herb mixture to the top of the chicken. Cook until fully cooked through, about 8 – 12 minutes. Let the chicken cool and then dice into bite sized pieces.
- Cook pasta according to the box directions.
- In a skillet (this will need to be a large one!), melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and stir continuously for about 1 minute. Add garlic and stir for 30 more seconds. Then add milk and cream as well as salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil while still continuously stirring. Once it has reached a boil, reduce the heat and add both the Parmesan and Neufchatel cheeses. Stir until completely melted.
- Toss pasta in the skillet with the sauce, coating evenly. The add your steamed asparagus and bacon bits. Mix together and serve!
