DIY Homemade Window Cleaner – The Best Streak Free Window Cleaner!
DIY Homemade Window Cleaner – The Best Streak Free Window Cleaner EVER!
One would think that living with six people would mean that there are plenty of people to clean up the house.
Well, that one would be wrong.
Living with six people…four of which are teens/tweens REALLY means that there is six times the mess, fingerprints, and junk….with one mom yelling and bribing people to help.
That’s just real talk.
But have no fear fellow mom-mers….I put them to work. Sorry, not sorry has become a mantra around this household.
One job that nobody seems to mind though, is washing the windows. Weird. I don’t know why. But they actually will argue about whoever gets to do it. Maybe they love my awesome DIY Homemade Window Cleaner just like I do.
When we started our cleaning business we made the switch to DIY homemade cleaners. One, they were way more cost effective. After all, saving money on cleaning supplies means bigger profits. Also, the homemade cleaners work just as well if not better than the store bought cleaners! Plus, it is so nice if you run out of something to just make another bottle. They take just a minute to make with ingredients that are common in the house or used in many other homemade cleaners.
Ingredients to make DIY Homemade Window Cleaner
- 1 cup vinegar
- 1 cup alcohol
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- Essential Oils/oil blend of your choice
- Funnel
- Spray bottle (I REALLY love these glass bottles!)
Instructions to make DIY Homemade Window Cleaner
In a jar or bowl, mix together vinegar and alcohol.
Stir in cornstarch and mix well.
Choose your oils! I have done just lemon, a lemon basil, lemon lavender and a pine cedar wood mix. Other yummy mixes include orange or grapefruit.
Using a funnel, pour into your clean spray bottle.
If desired, print out a free label and cut it to size. Using a sticker maker, turn it into a sticker and put on your bottle.
*Note: These sticker makers are awesome! We use ours all of the time for things around the house, art projects and school projects! Totally worth having it!
That’s it! Just give it a quick shake before using. Seriously, this is the best glass cleaner I’ve ever used!

DIY Homemade Toilet Bombs
DIY Homemade Toilet Bombs
This is a post all about my favorite way to keep your bathroom clean.
We have five kids.
No more needs to be said on that.
But seriously. I have literally a bazillion other things to do with my day than to clean the bathroom. So to help keep things sparkly clean (and not stinky…that part is very, VERY important) I swear by these DIY Homemade Toilet Bombs!
First of all, they are so simple to make. They only take three ingredients.
Second, to use all you have to do is to drop them into the toilet. The fizz up, clean it and deodorize it.
Third, even the kids like to use them. SCORE!
To make these DIY homemade toilet bombs you will need a few things.
- A silicone mold. You can get fancy if you want, but I’m lame and just used a square one.
- A glass jar. Again, be fancy if you want. I’m lame. I got a big jar at Hobby Lobby for about $3. (Yay for 50% off day!)
- Citric Acid. I totally Amazoned this. To be honest, no clue where you would find that at Target. LOL The citric acid will create the fizzing effect and also help breakdown water stains.
- Baking Soda. You will want the big box! Baking soda is a common household cleaner. It’s also a deodorizer.
- Essential oils. I use a mix of lavender, peppermint and lemon. Different oils do different things, but this mix helps to clean, kill germs and of course, smell good!
How to make homemade toilet bombs:
In a spray bottle, mix the water and essential oils.
Spray the water and oil mix into the baking soda and citric acid. It will fizzle a little bit, but that’s ok. (If you don’t have a spray bottle just be sure to add the water mix VERY slowly!)
Mix around until it is all damp.
Press into mold and allow to sit out and harden for a few hours.
Transfer to a jar or an airtight container. I have ours in a pretty glass jar in our bathroom.
That’s it! They are so easy to make. Once you use them, I promise you will make sure that you always have a batch ready!

Hands Down, The Best All Purpose Cleaner
Let’s play a game. Have you ever played 3 truths and a lie? It’s super easy. I say four statements and you pick out the one that isn’t truthful. Ready? Except this time…it’s cleaning edition.
- We own a cleaning company.
- I hate to clean.
- We have 5 kids and 2 dogs….who all make keeping things clean super difficult.
- I have to do the dishes right after dinner or it drives me crazy.
Do you know? The last one was the lie, but it does drive Dustin crazy so he normally gives in and does them. 🙂
Having a cleaning company means we have gone through a on of different cleaners looking for the right ones. But nothing has ever compared to this homemade cleaner. It really is hands down, the best all purpose cleaner ever! And it’s so inexpensive to make.
Supplies:
- 1 tsp Borax
- ½ tsp Washing Soda
- 1 tsp Liquid Castile Soap
- Warm Water
- Essential Oils – 12-15 drops
- Spray bottle
- All Purpose Cleaner Labels
- Sticker Maker
Instructions to make the best all purpose cleaner EVER:
In a clean bottle, pour the borax, washing soda and castile soap.
Fill with warm distilled water.
Add whatever essential oils you wish to the bottle of your cleaner. I sometimes use just lemon or just orange. But other times, I like to do a mix of grapefruit, orange and lemon or lemon and basil.
Put the lid on tightly and shake.
Print out our All Purpose Cleaner Labels and pick which one you want. Run the label through a sticker maker and attach it to your bottle.
(PS. Sticker makers are inexpensive and so handy to have! I use mine all the time for various things around the house or with the kids for school projects.)
A few important things:
- I REALLY love these glass bottles. I’m not a fan of plastic and we have been trying to eliminate as much as we can in our house. Plus, I feel fancy. And since I hate to clean, I take my victories when and where I can. 🙂 PS If you are worried about them breaking, I’ve been using them for over a year now and we haven’t broke any. (And remember, we have a small army!)
- Get the washing soda at the store if you can. It’s cheaper. I found mine in with the stain removers on the very bottom shelf.
- Don’t like lemon? Use grapefruit! Not a fan? Use orange! Not a fan of any of them? You can make a fragrance free version!
- Distilled water works best. But I’m not going to lie, there have been a few times I used regular old tap water.
- It will keep for a few months, but we go through it much faster than that!

Save Money On Dog Food And Treats (Save Hundreds Each Year!)
Save Money On Dog Food And Treats (Save Hundreds Each Year!)
If you follow me on Instagram (you do right?) then you have seen our dogs.
These two guys are pretty much my favorite. Before we go any further, let me just say, loud and clear
Adopt! Don’t shop!
Both Lincoln
And George are rescue pets from awesome organizations. Plus, adopting a dog is a great way to save money and not to mention saving a pup!
But if you already have your pet and you are looking for ways to save money on dog food then check out these tips:
Save Money On Dog Food
Make Your Own Dog Food
My number one tip to save on dog food is to make your own. First of all, it’s a great way to control what your dogs are eating. Second, you know it is filled with nothing but good stuff and third, they love it! Every dog parent wants to feed their dog good, quality dog food. Just like humans, good food helps pets live healthier and longer lives.
There are so many dog food recipes online. I’ve made this one from Damn Delicious before in the past and our dogs loved it. The only change I made was that I added a bit of coconut oil. Our dogs’ coats have never, ever looked better!
We’ve found so many veggies that our dogs like and we haven’t found any meats that they haven’t. 🙂
(Tip: I made a huge batch and then would use my vacuum sealer to seal and freeze it. Then I would only have to ‘cook’ once a month!)
Shop Around Online
(Psst! Check out these places and tips!)
Pet stores are generally NOT the place to shop. Their markups are usually the highest. Instead box stores and online are usually your best bet.
If you are shopping in the box stores, make sure you check your paper and online for coupons. But also, don’t forget to download apps like Ibotta. To use Ibotta, simply purchase the items as you normally would, take a photo of your receipt and your cash back will appear in your Ibotta account. You can cash out or purchase gift cards with the money! It’s a huge saver and super easy!
If you sign up through this link you can earn an extra $10 bonus!
Chewy.com is an online pet store filled with everything you could ever need. I like to check over by the tab of Today’s Deals. If your dog isn’t picky about their food, buying food on sale can be a great way to save! (Just remember to integrate their old food and new food while making the switch since some dog’s can be sensitive.)
I found this 24 pound bag of American Journey dog food that is normally $39.99 per bag, but it is a deal for 50% off your first bag. Add on that the option to autoship (you can cancel at any time) and you get an additional 5-10% off.
If you are new to the autoship program then you save 20%! As you can see above, my $40 bag of dog food had the price drop all the way to $17.74. And that includes a $5 shipping charge. (Shipping is free on orders $50+) Not bad…especially for a high quality dog food!
Amazon is another great spot to pick up dog food. And if you are a Prime member then shipping is free! (If you use the Honey extension for your computer you can even set up price alerts for when your favorite rand goes on sale or dips below a certain price. This makes it easy to stock up!)
Save On Dog Treats
Besides using the tips for saving on dog food above (and yes, you can make your own treats too! Pinterest is full of ideas!) one of my favorite places to get dog treats might be one you wouldn’t have thought of.
Subscription boxes are a great place to save money on dog food and treats. Plus, you get toys. 🙂
Barkbox is one of our absolute FAVORITES!!! For $29/month ($19 if you purchase a longer subscription) you get a box mailed to you filled with treats and toys. The food and treats are always a high quality and they have been a great way for us to try new ones.

Best Way To Save On School Supplies Online
Isn’t it crazy how we all go from summer mode to back to school mode in about two seconds flat? Well, get ready, because in the next week or so it is going to begin happening! The easiest way that I have found is to shop online for your school supplies. No crowds, no items out of stock and it is on your own time. Today I’m going to share with you a new program from Coupons.com called the Savings Guarantee and it is the best way to save on school supplies online!
What is the Coupons.com “Savings Guarantee”?
Just shop! Do your normal shopping, but before you checkout be sure to heck Coupons.com for an online coupon code. No need to check multiple places, because they have the best codes! But, if you happen to find a code that Coupons.com doesn’t have, they reward you for helping other shoppers save some money. Easy!
How does the “Savings Guarantee” work?
If you find a coupon code that Coupons.com doesn’t have, then Coupons.com will reward you $25. During the month of July, Coupons.com is doubling the reward, making it $50! *Starting in August, it will go back to a $25 reward. That’s a lot of money for submitting a coupon code!
I know that I am getting the best deals when I use Coupons.com. And now with the help of the whole frugal loving universe out there sending in codes that they find, I can shop with even more confidence. And hey, an extra $50 could buy quite a few school supplies if you submit your own code!
Like all price-matching or price guarantee offers, there are a few exclusions to the Coupons.com Savings Guarantee, but honestly you probably could have guessed that these codes would not work. For example:
- Codes that are exclusive to another website.
- Codes that provides the same discount as one that is already listed.
- Personal referral codes or a one-time use code.
- Non-code offers such as grocery coupons, in-store coupons, or discounts embedded in a link.
Are you ready to shop and save money?

How To Be An Amazon Reviewer (And Get Tons Of Things For Free!)
I’m pretty much obsessed with Amazon. I order gifts, stuff for the house, furniture, beauty products, and even groceries. But that’s all stuff that I pay for.
I also get lots of cool stuff for free too. No, not with credits that I earned from blogging. Just for free. And you can too! No blog required!
Sounds Too Good To Be True.
It’s not. Well it’s really awesome, but it is true! To the people who sell on Amazon, positive reviews are golden. So to help them receive more feedback, Amazon sellers will give out codes for free products in exchange for your honest opinions. You get to try out new products and in exchange you give them your thoughts. Easy and fun!
Is it really free?
It can be. I say can because sometimes some people will offer coupon codes to make the products super cheap. Other times they offer codes for it to be 100% free.
One thing to keep in mind is shipping. Some sellers will ship it to you for free and others want you to pay for it. If you have Amazon Prime chances are even if the sellers don’t pay for free shipping, your Prime will cover it. (Need a free trial to Amazon Prime? Get 30 days for free when you sign up here!)
Awesome. How do I get started?
Getting started is super easy. There are several free websites that you can sign up for that will allow you to sign up to get free codes for products on Amazon. Here are some that I use and 100% recommend. But before I share, I’m sure you are wondering what kind of things I’ve gotten! I’ve had essential oil diffusers, a motion activated emergency light (it’s actually much cooler than it sounds – we love it!), beauty products, even a screen for our door. I’ve gotten so many things, but what makes it cool is that you get to pick and choose which products you will actually use (or be able to use as a gift!)
Let me know if you sign up and what kind of products you get devlievered to your door – for FREE!
This is a great one! You can request up to 20 items at a time. You won’t be approved for everything you request so it is nice to be able to request a higher number of items. If you don’t hear back in a few days, move on to request new products. I like to sort through by best discount or lowest price (aka free).
This is another great site. There are two lists that you can sort through, free products and $1 products. You request the items you would like and you are emailed a coupon code. This one is awesome but it is hit or miss. Sometimes you get some pretty decent stuff and otherwise not so much. The good news is that it is updated ALL the time. Just about every time I login there are different items available.
This is a popular one that many people use. Actually this is where I got that really cool light from! 🙂 Today I checked in and didn’t see anything I was interested in, but check in often. You can find good stuff!
With this service they give you ‘tickets’ that you can turn in for different products. Once you choose your item, receive it and leave a review you just turn in your link and you earn more tickets. They usually have pretty good items. Today I was able to score a pack of jerky treats for our dogs. I’m usually pretty picky about what treats I buy them, but these looked like they will be a great choice. As you can see above, the treats usually sell for about $15 and after their coupon code, I didn’t pay a thing for them!
Keep an eye on this one! I’ve gotten several great items including an essential oil diffuser that I use all the time! They post their items daily (usually a bit later in the day).
A Few Tips…
- Amazon is not a fan of people who just join groups and buy free products only. Weird, I know. So make sure that you are leaving reviews for items that you actually purchase regularly as well. This will give you a nice balance. How do they know? Because they can see you entered the promotional code and because….
- Legally you have to disclose you received the item for free or for a discounted rate. An FTC thing. I know.
- Write good reviews. They don’t have to be 1,000 words, but leave a good review. I’m not saying if an item is garbage you lie. I mean quality counts. People vote for helpful reviews on Amazon all the time. If your reviews are voted helpful regularly you can expect sellers to start contacting you offering their products to you to review. And generally, you can contact sellers as well and offer to review. THAT is how you get the really good stuff!

35 Kitchen Gadgets You Shouldn’t Be Without
What’s in your kitchen? I hope it’s one of these 35 kitchen gadgets! They save space, make clean up easier, help in your cooking and sometimes, they are just really cute alternatives to things you have to buy anyways.
These kitchen must haves won’t break the bank either! Most are under $20 (with a lot under $10!) Your kitchen will be the best stocked and ready to go thanks to these helpful items!
There are tons of awesome kitchen gadgets that won’t break the bank. I have several of these and plan on ordering the ones I don’t have already. I use them all the time and they come in super handy. Here are some of my favorites, that you probably don’t have, but totally should!
This Folding Grater ($9.99) is perfect for people like me! I love gadgets (obviously), but I don’t like clutter. This folds down flat so it makes storing it no problem and it doesn’t take up much room.
I own a few sets of these and I absolutely love them. Whether you use them occasionally to help with leftovers or if you are getting into freezer cooking, these hands free bag holders come in crazy handy. They are a bargain too, only $9.99 for a set of two.
Another item that I have bought and can tell you personally about it’s amazingness, this Pineapple Corer (only $6.79) makes coring a pineapple only take seconds. Bonus: We’ve had a few luau parties and this not only helped with our fruit dishes, but the hollowed out pineapples made for perfect vases for flowers. You could also fill them back up with cut fruit.
I haven’t personally used these, but I did just order them on Amazon. These Silicone Bowls are called Pinch Bowls and you can gently pinch them to make pouring simple and ditch the mess. (Choose from quart size or half cup size!)
Confession. I love garlic, but I normally just buy the jars of already minced garlic. But this little garlic chopper is not only under $10, but it’s simple to use and allows you to use fresh garlic (yum) easily.
Ok, well, I kind of just thought this was hilarious. These pasta measurers make sure you get the right amount of pasta every time. Portions for kids, women, men and for those times that you are so hungry you could eat a … Horse, T-Rex, or Unicorn!
This Clip on Spout is only $9.95 and can attach to pots, pans or bowls. Whether you need to drain or pour it comes in handy, doesn’t take up much room and you will quickly start to wonder what you did without it!
Have you heard of Anti Soggy Bowls? They are divided bowls that keep your cereal from getting soggy. Genius right? But they are pretty handy. Chips on one side and dip on the other, fries on the left and ketchup on the right or soup and your crackers. They are also perfect for people that don’t like their food touching. My son wet through a phase that he didn’t like that, so these were perfect. Mac and cheese completely separate from the green beans. #MomWin $8.95
Here is another item that has really made things easier at our house! Dip trays! They snap on your plates. Perfect for dips and also sauces. Great for BBQ’s and you know, Wednesday night dinners. Get four of them for only $6.99!
We have been trying to be healthier at our house. One of those changes is eating more fish. I use this Citrus Sprayer (only $6.20!) all the time. But not just for fish, I spray it on veggies, a few sprays in my tea, and I would totally be lying if I didn’t admit that I first thought about doing a flashback of spraying lemon juice in my hair this summer. (Please, tell me someone else used to use Sun In back in the day!)
This is another one of those things that is just a cute upgrade to something you already have. This Pasta-saurus ($9.95) is a super fun way to serve up your pasta dinner.
Yes, yes, yes. Everyone needs two of these. Just clip it to the side of your pot and your spoon rests without making a drippy mess all over your stove. I’m all for anything to simplify clean up! Get the Pot Clip for only $8.95.
This is honestly one of my favorites! This flat whisk allows you to do your thing, turn the handle and it folds flat. Why is that amazing? Because it makes getting it ALL out of the bowl super easy. Not only that, but cleaning is simple. I always hated cleaning the whisks – food gets inside the middle and it’s hard to get, but not anymore. And finally for storage – it takes up less space! Oh, and yes, it’s under $10!
No, they aren’t staplers. These are bag re-sealers! For $15.99 you get a set of 2 (so only $8 each!) and they quickly will pay for themselves. Reseal bags of cereal, chips, or snacks in no time.
These Grill Clips are a must have for grill masters! You get a set of 4 for $10 to help you make the perfect grilled veggies.
Ready for some more awesome items that you shouldn’t be without? Here are some that are under $20!
This little gadget ($11.95) comes in super handy during baking. Easily separate the egg yolks and egg whites for recipes. Or if you are wanting to eat a healthier breakfast, scramble up the egg whites.
I love a good cup of tea. Recently I started switching to dried tea leaves from tea bags. It is fresh and makes me able to customize my blends. While looking for a tea infuser, I came across this adorable Whale Tea Infuser for just $11.19. Not only is it super practical and easy to use (the water spout never gets hot!) but it’s adorable.
Have you seen those viral videos on Facebook where they make incredible pancakes in the shapes of famous characters, people, etc? This is how! With a Pancake Pen – $10.95 – you can create a fun breakfast. I haven’t graduated to pancake art, but my son thinks it’s pretty awesome for pancakes that spell out his name.
This Double Dish is genius. Perfect for snacking, the empty bowl on the bottom is ideal for discarding shells, seeds or pits of your favorite snack. For $15.15, it’s just what you need for binge watching on the couch with your snacks.
Speaking of genius products, this Rinse and Strain Bowl – $14.69 – is one of those things that make you say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Quick and easy….music to my ears!
Ok, so I haven’t tried this yet, but I ordered it today. However, I’m totally late in the spiralizing game – this thing has been getting major buzz and awesome reviews. The Vegetable Spiralizer is only $15.84 and comes with everything you need to get started creating a healthier version of pasta or some super awesome veggie side dishes. A bonus recipe book is included.
In my dreams, I have a double oven. But meanwhile, I have an Oven Rack (only $17.49) that helps me to make the most out of space that I do have! Seriously a game changer for parties and holiday cooking!
I’m not entirely sure how it happened, but somehow I ended up with a full knife block on the counter and a drawer full of loose knives. This Knife Organizer was a cheap (just $13.53) way to organize my drawer. Not to mention it’s a lot safer than fishing around a drawer with them just loose!
These Chip/Cracker Holders are crazy handy to have in your pantry. Keep your food fresh longer. They will quickly pay for themselves!
I don’t use my flour and sugar that often, so I like to keep them in a Flour Keeper . For $16.78, I know it stays fresh and ready to use. The measuring level on the lid makes things easy getting the perfect cup full.
I got this cutting board before we moved into our current house. I was seriously slacking counter space, so the fact that this fit over the sink made it a great space saver. But now, we have plenty of counter space, but the built in strainer is so handy that I don’t think I can ever get rid of it! Over the sink cutting board – $19.99
Can you believe how many awesome things we have found so far? We are almost done with our list, but here are a few under $50 that you totally need.
This would be a great gift – for yourself or someone else! It’s great for small kitchens or for people who just love organized kitchens! Get the Compact Food Prep Set for $34.27.
Why dirty a second dish if you don’t need to? This lid eliminates the need to dirty a second one. It makes it super simple to drain and strain. I have this pot and use it all the time. The Pasta Pot was totally worth the $29.99!
This little Marinade Infuser and meat tenderizer is amazing. You won’t believe the difference that this $34.98 gadget makes as opposed to just marinating in a plastic bag. But don’t just take my word for it, this has great reviews!
Are you a hostess? Then you need this Party Tray with Ice for your next soiree! For only $27.95, you have a great serving dish with built in ice chamber to keep your dishes ready for guests to much on.
This is brilliant. The Click N Cook is one handle that simply ‘clicks’ off and attaches to one of 5 different attachments. Buying the set makes each kitchen necessity cost less than $10 each!
This Cutlery cleaning attaches to your sink and makes cleaning your silverware a breeze. Just dip your spoon, fork, etc inside and everything easily scrubs off. If you hand wash your dishes or use a dishwasher, this makes sure you get super clean dishes the simple way!
I NEED this!! I have a serious ice cream love and this lets you make your own soft serve from fruit! How awesome is that? Fruit Soft Serve Maker – $41.27
Only 2 kitchen gadgets left! These two are both under $125 and worth every penny!
I bought this Food Saver ($79.99) a while ago and I LOVE it. It is worth every penny and so much more. Actually, it saves us money! I can make meals ahead of time, use it to package up our Zaycon orders (I save SO much money from ordering our meats from them!) and re-seal our open food. One tip is to use them for packing for trips! I have made ‘pouches’ for bringing dog food with us (SO much easier for car rides to have ‘single serve’ packs made up) and even vacuum sealed my necklaces to keep the chains from tangling.
I haven’t tried this…yet. Have you seen it before? It’s an Air Fryer – $109.95 – and makes your favorite fried foods a bit healthier. You can fry meat and veggies in here and it uses air to circulate and ‘fry’ instead of the traditional oil. I will be getting one ASAP! If you have one I would love to hear what you think of it!

Easy Gardening Tips We Love #MomsCheckIn
It’s time! Spring is here and everyone is getting their gardens ready! Are you? Here are some easy gardening tips that we love! Share your best garden tip! #MomsCheckIn
One of my favorite things about summer is growing our vegetable garden. The kids enjoy watching things go from a seed to real food, and I love being able to walk out the backdoor, grab some goodies out of the garden, and throw together dinner. Nothing better than a ripe garden tomato! And if you don’t have a green thumb, check out our lollipop garden. That’s an easy little project we had so much fun with! Looking for more tips? Here are lots of tips that we use!

I’ll be honest — I don’t have a green thumb. But I do love beautiful flowers and plants! I’ve learned that it’s ok to have a small garden with hearty plants. A big part of the joy for me is just watching Sam enjoy helping out and being outdoors. I’ll leave the big gardens to the pros and enjoy what’s growing in our backyard!

So – just being honest here….a full fledged garden didn’t work for us. We just weren’t disciplined enough to keep it weeded and watered, so we’re opting for small container gardens. They’re so much easier to keep up with. Here’s our beginner guide on container gardening! It’s perfect for favorite produce like tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, peppers, and especially herbs.

We love gardening! And by we, I really do mean we! I try to make it fun for Josh. Did you know you can regrow some vegetables? It’s been a fun science experiment. Our favorite to regrow so far has been avocados! As far as myself, we live in an apartment so we don’t have a yard. But I do have an Aerogarden that we have set up in our kitchen. It lets me grow herbs, vegetables and even flowers all year around!

New Year resolutions are in full swing right now and many of you are hoping to spend a little less and save a little more. I know I am! Here are a few of our best money saving tips for 2015!s #MomsCheckIn
The thing we spend the most money on is food. If I slack in the menu planning department we are at the store a few times a week and it adds up fast. Really fast. This year I’m planning to be more strict with myself about planning a menu, doing one shopping trip a week, and shopping from the flyer so I can buy what’s on sale and plan my menu around that, stocking up while I can save. It makes a huge difference and just requires a little bit of planning each week!

I’m not much of a couponer or a flyer watcher. But I do watch our spending tightly so that we can focus on the priorities for our family — like retiring early and giving Sam an excellent education. When I am going shopping, I take out the amount of cash I want to spend for the day and keep to that budget. That way, I’m not tempted to use my credit card or overspend because I see something that’s too good of a deal to refuse. It’s worked well for our family and helped us keep on budget — which I’m really proud of!

My biggest tip is to turn down the thermostat a few degrees in the winter and turn it up a few degrees in the summer. Our heating/cooling bill is the biggest chunk of money spent and just by turning it up or down a few degrees can REALLY make a big difference. I’m a big believer in wearing layers in the winter. If you’re cold, put on a sweater…haha! Actually though…keeping it a little cooler in the house during the winter is better for you too. Doctors will tell you to keep your home between 65-70 degrees. The cooler the better, because heat dries up your sinuses, making infections easier to breed. Yuck!

We try to keep our electric bill in check. We do lots of different things like using power strips, using energy efficient appliances, and using smarter lights. You can find lots of energy saving tips here! I also do the $5 method. Every time I get a $5 bill it goes into savings. When I am out at the store, I try to spend just $5 less. It makes it easy and at the end of the year, all of those $5 bills really adds up!
