And next Thursday we will be hosting a Moms Check In Twitter party from 1-2 PM (Eastern)! Make sure to sign up below to RSVP below! It will be tons of fun plus we are giving away lots of Walmart gift cards!

Best Potty Training Tips 3

Waiting to potty train when your kiddo is showing signs that they’re ready is key! When they’re waking up dry, that’s a first good indication that they might be ready. Buy some super cute big girl or big boy underwear, maybe even with some of their favorite characters on them. Stickers….kids love stickers! Keep a sticker chart in the bathroom and give them a sticker for each time that they go potty!! One more thing….pretend that their favorite doll or action figure is going potty too. Cheer on the doll/action figure, and give THEM a sticker as well. The kids might be like, “Hey! I want you to cheer for me and give ME a sticker too!”.

Consistency! Potty training was most challenging for me just because of the effort it required to stick with it. But when you’re really ready and your child is too, get them on the pot every hour or so to at least try to go. Set a timer if that helps you remember. Mine both learned faster when we stayed home for a few days and made it a point to get on the potty to try to go every hour throughout the day. And be patient. They always learn eventually!

My best potty training tip is strike a balance: don’t press toddlers too hard and once you start training, just keep charging through and it WILL get better! A helpful tip for boys that I received from an experiences mom is to put a square of toilet paper in the toilet: tell them to sink the ship!

I’ll be honest potty training was a nightmare for us. My son wanted NOTHING to do with it. I remember going to the store saying “This is the last time I’m buying diapers. You will have to go on the potty.” And of course I was back buying more the next week. My son was 3 1/2 before he was potty trained! BUT one morning he woke up and said he wanted to wear big boy underwear to school. I was so excited. We had tried wearing underwear before (both by themselves and over his diaper) but he had never initiated it! He went all day without an accident!!! And then, slept through the night. No accidents. And then all week without an accident! I’m sure he could have done it earlier, but he wasn’t ready. So, my advice is to talk about it (a lot!) and take cues from your child when they are ready!

Let them watch you go potty. “Ew!” I know, right? But here’s how it worked for us: When my oldest was potty training, we rewarded with M&M’s. One day while we were both in the kids’ bathroom, I said I wanted to go potty. I did, without asking her to leave the room, and I rewarded myself with M&M’s. Wouldn’t you know, she decides SHE wants to go potty, and had success! And M&M’s.

  1. Potty training has been the bane of my existence for the last two years. Then we found out that my son had a dairy allergy. As soon as we took dairy from his diet, magically he was potty trained.

  2. Potty training will happen naturally, no need to fuss, stress or worry. So many moms get so worried when their child is going potty yet, I think that causes more stress on the kid than anything. They will go, eventually, they get it. lol Love these tips! Twitter parties rock!

  3. My girls are so past this point. But how they learned to potty train was walking around with no underwear they soon learned to dislike the feel of pee running down their legs. LOL

  4. I love the tip about consistency! I believe being consistent lets them know its the new normal. It’s can’t be sometimes or you will only get sometimes back.

  5. Oh my gosh, I need this party!! My son was completely potty trained 3 weeks ago. His big sister started school this week and we are back to going in our pants. I marked you on my calendar! See you next week!

  6. This was a very colorful experience all three times I did it. My first potty trained himself at 1 1/2 and he didn’t want to be wet in a diaper. The other two were a nightmare. LOL

  7. Our last child was harder to potty train than our other three who did it so easily. We were consistent, and we talked about it a lot (like mentioned above) in a positive way. He did give us cues when he was finally ready. 🙂

  8. Love the different opinions. Having four kids, each trained differently. I would say follow the signs and offer opportunity to use the potty as much as possible. Treats work well too 🙂

  9. It has been many years since i had to worry about potty training. I am glad to see so many great products available for parents.

  10. This is awesomesauce since I have a two year old who is currently getting potty trained! I’ll be there!

  11. Our grestest tip was to invite kids that had already potty trained over for playdates when out child heard the other ones were using the potty they wanted to go as well. Peer pressure isnt always a bad thing 😉

  12. Potty training both my kids are pretty easy and were done within a week at 20 mths. With both my kids, I potty trained them during summertime because it was easier for them without all the layers of clothes.
