This is honestly one of my favorites! This flat whisk allows you to do your thing, turn the handle and it folds flat. Why is that amazing? Because it makes getting it ALL out of the bowl super easy. Kitchen Gadgets You Need

I bought this Food Saver ($79.99) a while ago and I LOVE it. It is worth every penny and so much more. Actually, it saves us money! I can make meals ahead of time, use it to package up our Zaycon orders (I save SO much money from ordering our meats from them!) and re-seal our open food. One tip is to use them for packing for trips! I have made ‘pouches’ for bringing dog food with us (SO much easier for car rides to have ‘single serve’ packs made up) and even vacuum sealed my necklaces to keep the chains from tangling.

Kitchen Gadgets You Need

I haven’t tried this…yet. Have you seen it before? It’s an Air Fryer – $109.95 – and makes your favorite fried foods a bit healthier. Laundry: How often should you wash your bedding, towels?

So I have this friend, who is remaining nameless (although, I’m sure the second she sees this she will be calling!) who I always seem to have the conversation of “How often do you wash your sheets? Your towels? Your pillows?” In fact, we’ve even opened it up on Facebook before asking for everyone how their household runs! But today, I’m sharing the truth. The hows and the whys…..the truth about your laundry!

How often should you wash your sheets? Towels? Pillows? Here is the truth!

How often do you wash your sheets?

Let’s start with your sheets, which is how this whole post came about! You should wash your sheets once a week (and possibly twice a week), especially if any of the following are true:

  • If someone in the family is sick.
  • If you shower in the morning.
  • In the summertime during very hot nights.
  • If your pets sleep in bed with you.

Why should you wash your sheets once a week?

Dirt, sweat, and dust mites. Oh my. Most people shower in the morning. So all day long, your skin is producing oil, you sweat, and even if you can’t see it, you collect germs and dirt. Then, you climb into bed and curl up, pulling those covers close. Beds and pillows are dust mites dream. It’s so important to have mattress protector and pillow protective covers on. They aren’t expensive and help to not only protect your bedding, keep things clean but also can majorly cut down on allergens.

How should you wash your sheets and bedding?

Here are some tips on washing your sheets and bedding.

  • Wash in hot water. Hot water will kill any dust mites (gross, I know!) This is so important if you suffer from allergies.
  • You can sanitize your down comforter and pillows by throwing them in the dryer. You can do this once a week and is a good alternative to washing.

How often should you wash your sheets? Towels? Pillows? Here is the truth!

How often should you wash your pillows?

Pillows are easy to clean and should be washed twice a year. You should never, ever use your pillow without a pillow protector on. Whether you want to admit it or not, you drool (sorry), hair sheds, and both your hair and face produce oil. Clean pillows and pillow cases can also help keep your skin clear. An awesome added bonus if you ask me.

How do you wash pillows?

Washing pillows is super easy. Just put in your washer in hot water. When drying, add a few tennis balls. Just be sure that the pillows are 100% dry before putting the protector sheet and pillow case on. If you have down feathers, check your label. You may have to take them to the dry cleaners.

How often should you wash your sheets? Towels? Pillows? Here is the truth!

How often should you wash your hand towels?

Confession. I hate hand towels. I’m forever going into the bathroom to fix how they hang. And you have to wash them. Quite a bit. Every 2-3 days. <— YES. Why? Well they are usually hung in high traffic areas. I remember in my first apartment there was a towel bar above the toilet. And it completely grossed me out. While we haven’t run into that problem since, the towel bar isn’t usually far from the toilet. Toilet aside, the hand towels in our home aren’t just for drying hands. They get used for drying off faces and in my son’s case, wiping off the excess toothpaste off his mouth too. And I’ve gone to dry my hands and gotten a glob of toothpaste. No one wants that! Toss in the wash and replace.

How often should you wash your bath towels?

You shower to remove dirt and grime, but you also loosen up lots of dead skin and hair in the process. Lots of that gets caught in your towel while you dry off. So while your body is now clean, your towel isn’t. The next time you dry off, you are rubbing all of that back onto your just cleaned body. Plus, towels get stinky fast. You should wash your towels after 3-4 uses. If you have a particularly dirty job or the kids have a super messy day, wash your towels more often.

(Check out my favorite towels! They are a little pricey, but they are big, and incredibly thick making them super soft and absorbent. If you are looking for a luxurious splurge, I can’t recommend them enough!)

Let Kids Be Kids – Mess And All #FreeToBe

This post is a sponsored post written on behalf of myself for all free & clear and Linqia. All thoughts are 100% my own.

Let Kids Be Kids

This week Josh is on Spring Break. We just moved, we just got a dog, we just got a cat and basically, this year, I really didn’t have the energy to pack up and travel. So it’s been a stay-cation Spring Break for us. In my head I had plans for going to the zoo (which we did manage to get done!), hiking, trips to the parks, going geocaching and so on. But obviously the weather has had other plans for us. It’s rained EVERYDAY! And the forecast is saying rain everyday for the rest of the week.

chase3

But a little rain never hurt anyone! Right? And mud? Josh and Lincoln seem to laugh in mud’s face!

dog7

dog13

dog14

There are two things that make this little dog’s heart pitter patter more than anything else in the world. The first is playing ball. We are still working on the whole bringing it back thing (and dropping it!), but man, as soon as you throw it he flies through anything in his way to get to it! Mud goes flying, grass gets kicked up, and yes, he’s even been known to run into people (or dogs) who get in his way. He obviously has his eye on that ball and nothing else!

dog16

His butt goes in the air and his tail starts wagging. He loves it. There is only one other thing that makes him happier.

His boy.

josh lincoln 3

Now I admit, when Josh came out in his new (white) t-shirt to wear today I was a tad nervous. But it’s a cool shirt! It’s new! Of course he wanted to wear it! What’s the point of having shirts if Mom just tells him he can’t wear them right?

love

And I’m going to admit that when Josh laid down in his (white) shirt on the (very) muddy ground, the Mom in me wanted to be like ooooohh! Quick! Get up!

love2

It’s muddy! You will ruin your shirt! Grass + mud = laundry nightmare!

love4

I’m glad I didn’t say anything though. Instead, I got to witness a boy and his dog. Best friends. Playing, talking and loving each other.

kiss2

And I would have missed capturing some pretty awesome moments!

kiss3

Because seriously…..who says no to this?

Yes he got a little muddy. (Or a lot muddy!)

Let Kids Be Kids

But isn’t that what kids (and pups) are supposed to do! And messes, mud, and grass stains are all why I have all free & clear on hand! It’s super tough on those messes and super soft on skin. Sensitive skin is in good hands with all free & clear!

I personally use their whole line of products!

all3

And we have been super happy with them! They have laundry boosters, laundry detergent, fabric softener and dryer sheets. It’s safe for he washing machines, safe for sensitive skin and is awesome for getting out stains! Which means kids are free to be kids! I don’t have to try to choose between tough on stains and sensitive on skin anymore!

before and after

5 Ideas For a Clean & Organized Refrigerator

5 ideas and tips for an organized refrigerator

Happy New Year! If you are like many people you are planning on how to make this your most organized year…EVER.

And to help you out, I’ve made a list of the best refrigerator organizing tips and hacks out there.refrigerator

Let’s start with something genius. Fridge Coasters! One of the worst chores in the house is scrubbing the refrigerator out. Let’s make 2015 the year to work smarter and not harder! We all have so many other things to be doing than scrubbing out the milk rings and globs of grape jelly. Now, you will still need to clean with this product but it makes it 100 times easier. Just clear off the Fridge Coaster, wipe and viola. You are done. Plus, the pop of color makes me happy!

These are super inexpensive and will really make things easier! You can even buy a different color coaster for different things (example, snacks go on blue coasters, veggies on the green coasters, etc).

fridge bins

Now that you have your shelves lined, lets get some organization going! I’m in love with these clear organizing tools from InterDesign. They make them in so many sizes, shape, and for just about any purpose. They are made to be able to stack on top of each other easily. They have handles so they are easy to move. Whether you are getting some to store your eggs, hold your wine bottles, or even to store your fruit there is a bin for it!

where to store

Not sure where to store your food? SquawkFox shows you where!

no baking soda

You can’t do all this work of cleaning and organizing your refrigerator and have it stink. (Or worse – your ice cubes and water taste gross!) This deodorizer is 50 times more powerful than a box of baking soda and will solve the stink (and taste) problems your freezer and refrigerator is having.

shelves

Want to add some instant shelves in your freezer (or refrigerator)? Take magazine files and place them sideways. Easy.

You can find some like shown above for under $3.50 on Amazon here.

(This idea is from the awesome Aunt Peaches!)

How To Prepare For Unexpected House Guests

How to prepare for unexpected house guests

There isn’t much worse than being caught off guard for visitors or overnight guests! You can easily make your home house guest friendly and ready at the drop of a dime! Simply by keeping a few things ready and handy, you can make sure that both your guests and yourself have a fun (stress free) time!

  • A Go-To Recipe

It’s important to have a recipe that is your go-to recipe! One that you know how to make and how to make well! When company is coming over for dinner should not be the time to experiment in the kitchen! (Unless going out for dinner is an option!)For me, my go to recipe is lasagna. And as an added bonus, we usually have the ingredients to make it!
  • A Nice Bottle Of Wine

Keeping a bottle of wine kept back for when you are entertaining is always a good idea!
  • A Clean Space

This is easier said than done, huh? But by generally straightening up throughout the day and before you go to bed you can keep your house tidy.If guests are stopping by unexpectedly, don’t worry! They expect things like the kids to have their Lego’s out or your laundry basket sitting on the dining room table. There is a difference between lived in and dirty!

Even if your house is ‘lived in’ you want to make sure that your guest has a clean space for spending the night. No one wants to feel like a burden. It’s embarrassing for the host and the person who is staying if you have to go clean out a room for them. Keep the guest room reserved for guests. Keep clean sheets, a few extra pillows and an extra blanket ready for them.

  • Create a Guest Basket

We’ve all been there before. You start to unpack to realize you forgot your hair brush, blow dryer, toothbrush, deodorant, or headache medicine.By creating a basket filled with items like this will mean a lot to your guests! You can use sample size items (a great use for those freebies that come in the mail!) or purchase full size products. As an added bonus: when you are packing for your child or yourself you know that you have extras!

Some ideas of items to include are:

    – Shampoo/Conditioner

    – Body Wash

    – Soap

    – Razor

    – Shaving Cream

    – Q-Tips

    – Face Wash

    – Lotion

    – Toothbrush

    – Toothpaste

    – Blow Dryer/Hair Straightener

    – Deodorant

    – Tylenol/Aspirin

    – Chapstick

  • Wifi Ready

By writing down your Wifi password you can help your guest from even having to ask! Plus, you help yourself from having to rattle off that long password!Consider keeping a copy of the password to keep in your guest basket!
  • A Quick Cleaning Plan

You just got the phone call! Your mother-in-law and sister-in-law are in the neighborhood and going to stop by. You’ve got about 10 minutes! What are you going to do? Load the dishes in the dishwasher? Maybe run the Swiffer quickly? Chose a quick chore that can be done in just a minute or two. The rest of the time should be spent quickly picking up and decluttering. Most people will notice clutter but won’t notice that you didn’t just wash your windows. Do a quick glance as if you were the guest. And remember – we are our own worst critics! Things that are driving you crazy are things that others may not even notice!

Guests coming over? No problem! You are ready! By having a few things ready ahead of time (and a plan!) you can be ready for guests in minutes. How do you prepare for house guests?

What Cleaning Supplies You Need To Stock A Cleaning Caddy

What you really need to clean your house! Awesome list and tips!

We all want a clean home! Some of us (if you are like me!) don’t like spending tons of time cleaning. It’s not a ‘for fun’ type of thing but rather a ‘because I have to’ thing. But one thing that even this I-Hate-To-Clean-Unless-I’m-In-The-Mood-Cleaner will say is …. when your house is clean it’s so much nicer!! Nicer to come home to, easier to relax in, and all around just more enjoyable! So here are my must have items that every home should have!

caddy

The most convient way to store your cleaning supplies is inside a cleaning caddy. It will hold a lot and you can pick it up and easily move it from room to room.

They are also relatively inexpensive. This basic caddy is only $11.27 (and will ship for free with your Amazon Prime account. Don’t have an Amazon Prime account? You can sign up here for a free 30 day trial!)

So now that you have your caddy, what supplies do you really need to have to fill it with? Here is a list of must have supplies to tackle all of your home’s messes:

its clean

(My nice and clean windows after using Shaklee! You should have seen the before pictures! Yikes!)

Window Cleaner – Use window cleaner for windows, mirrors, cooktops, glass tops and to wipe down any chrome fixtures. I like Sprayway and if you are looking for a green cleaner Shaklee Window Cleaner is my favorite (You can read my full review here!)

swiffer wet jet

Floor Cleaner – I regularly use my Swiffer so I have a pack of Swiffer WetJet pads, but I also keep a bottle of Mr. Clean Multipurpose cleaner! I love the Hawaiian scent! It’s great for floors as well as greasy messes, bathrooms, etc.

mrs meyers

All Purpose Cleaner – Use an all purpose cleaner to wipe down the kitchen counters, table or sinks in the bathroom. My favorite is Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Counter Top Spray Lemon Verbena (the basil smells really good too!) Don’t forget about making your own! (Find out here!)

bleach pen

Bleach – Sometimes you need to break out the bleach to disinfect items! Don’t forget about a bleach pen! (See our how to clean grout article here)

orange pledge

Dusters – I love my Swiffer Duster for blinds and to grab all the dust off my ceiling fan. (Try it! No more dust falling everywhere!) But I also keep a bottle of Orange Pledge in for dusting the furniture!

full_flushable_wipes

Bathroom Cleaners – My favorite toilet cleaner won’t actually go into your cleaning caddy, it hangs on the side of your toilet. Convienent and out of the way – the Scrubbing Bubbles Fresh Brush is my go to cleaner. I also love the Scrubbing Bubbles Flushable Wipes for a quick clean up! Since both are flushable it makes cleaning up extra easy!

gloves

Rubber Gloves – No cleaning caddy should be without a pair of rubber gloves! Whether you go for a pair of the old school yellow kind or get a fancy pair (these are from Flirty Aprons and available in lots of fun colors/designs!) a pair of rubber gloves will protect your hands and nails from tough cleaning jobs.

Brightly colored sponges on white background with copy space.

Paper towels, rags, sponges (Learn how to disinfect and clean your sponges here!)

That’s what I keep in my cleaning caddy? What are your favorite cleaning supplies?

Cleaning Tip – How to Clean Grout

Don’t you hate when you clean something, step back and you know it’s clean but it still looks a little dirty? That is, or I should say, was me with the grout in our bathroom! I would clean the shower, but still there was a tint to our once white grout that drove me crazy! Then I learned a bathroom cleaning tip on how to clean grout. It does take a little time, but it’s not hard (more teadious). But the good news is that it looks SO much better and it doesn’t have to be done very often!

bleach pen

You will just need a bleach pen and sponge!

How To Clean Grout

Bleach pens are awesome because they have a fine tip side and the bleach is thicker than it would be straight from the bottle. Just squeeze on your bleach on the grout (you don’t need to go crazy) and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes. I usually do this first and then go on and clean the rest of my bathroom. By the time I’m done cleaning the toilet, sinks and mirrors the bleach has done it’s job!

(My before and after. And confession: I didn’t even let it sit for as long as I should have!)

Use your sponge to scrub the bleach on the grout and do a quick swipe over the tile! There is no sense in working harder than you have to! Go ahead and clean the shower tiles while you are at it! 🙂 Then just simply rinse! Your grout should be nice and clean!

How To Clean Grout

(Don’t forget to pin!)

*I have not tried this, but I’ve heard that this will also work on colored grout as well. I would test a very small spot before doing the whole thing!*

3 Ways to Disinfect Sponges And When You Should Throw Them Away

3 Ways to Disinfect Your Sponges and When Your REALLY Need To Throw Them Away

Sponges are growing fields for bacteria! Seriously! Scientists use them to grow different bacterias in their labs! The moisture makes them the perfect breeding ground. But you can disinfect your sponges easily! Here are 3 ways to disinfect sponges and when you really need to throw them away!

The first way is the most common and basic. Simply dry it out. Bacteria can only live for a few hours on a dry surface. After every use rinse and place in a spot that it can easily air dry.

Sponge holder that will allow your sponges to fully dry to avoid bacteria growth (Bonus: SUPER affordable!)

Sponge holders are awesome, but make sure you have one that will allow for all parts of the sponge to air dry. You want to avoid ones that water can accumulate. The one above is perfect for allowing plenty of air and allowing the water to drain. Plus it’s only $7.99! (Get it here!)

3 Ways To Disinfect Your Sponges & When You Should Throw Them Away

The second way to disinfect your sponge is really easy. The next time that you are running a load of towels in the washing machine, throw in your sponge! After it is done washing take it out and let it air dry.

3 Ways to Disinfect Sponges & When You Should Throw It Away

The third method to disinfecting your sponge is super quick. DO NOT DO THIS METHOD WITH A SPONGE WITH ANY METAL IN IT. Wet the sponge (DO NOT FORGET THIS PART! A dry sponge can catch fire in the microwave! (You can also fill a bowl with water and put the sponge in it!) Heat in the microwave for 3 minutes, keeping an eye on it. When it is done, it will be very hot with lots of steam so be careful! Let it cool! Once it is cool enough to touch, wring out the excess water and your sponge will be ready to use! This is the most effective method for killing all of the germs and bacteria!

3 Ways to Disinfect Your Sponges & When You Need to Throw Them Away

So how long should you keep a sponge before throwing it away? Even with regular disinfecting? One month! Are you surprised? At the beginning of each month open up a new pack and treat yourself to a new sponge! 🙂

The Easy, No Soak, No Scrub way to clean your dirtiest dishes

no scrub no soak cleaning1

It never fails when I make spaghetti sauce (recipe coming this week!) or chili that I get a nasty spot on the bottom of my stock pot. I used to soak it over night and scrub like a mad woman. Then I would proceed to swear I was never going to cook again because honestly, I hate doing dishes.

But I have a life changing way of cleaning some of those pesky dishes. Life. Changing. Ready?

Frugal Friday! How to make your fabric softener last forever! (Or a really long time anyways…)

Hooray it’s Friday! Here is this week’s frugal idea:

So as you know I coupon. I love using coupons for our cleaning and personal care items. They don’t expire (or have super long shelf life!) and most of the time I can get them for free or close to free.
$10 for a razor? I don’t think so! $20 for a bottle of Tide? Not a chance. $7 for a bottle of shampoo? Have you lost your mind??? I just can’t do it. I’m able to stock up on these things pretty easily for 90-100% off the retail price. But for some reason – dryer sheets and fabric softener don’t seem to get the same awesome deals that the other products get.
So a few years ago a friend told me this tip on how to turn your fabric softener into a dryer sheet. And it makes your bottle last forever a really long time! This bottle of Snuggle was I am going to guess about $3 for 40 loads. And the bottle has lasted us oh gosh, at least a year. Maybe more?
Here is what you do:
Take a washcloth (I do 2 at a time so I can rotate my ‘dryer sheets’) and put it in a bowl (or a bowl lid like I did!).

Then you just pour the fabric softener on top – soak it! Make sure to flip your washcloth over so both sides get nice and covered. Then just let it dry. It will take awhile to dry – remember we soaked it! About halfway I flip it over and that seems to help it dry a little faster. Last night it was just still damp (but dry enough not to be dripping all over the place!) and I put it draped over a box fan we had – it dried in no time! AND our house smelled so clean! I love that clean smell!!!

When it’s dry, just toss it in with the laundry like a regular dryer sheet. Except don’t throw it away when you are done! Keep reusing it!

I would guess that I do at least 10-11 loads of laundry a week. (That’s 572 loads a year! If you poured the fabric softener in each load you would need over 14 bottles!! Yikes!) I do 2 ‘dryer sheets’ at a time so I can rotate them and I make a new batch of ‘dryer sheets’ about every 6 months. So each one lasts about 3 months. Compared to the bottle saying it lasts 40 loads – this is a huge improvement! And our clothes still smell good! 🙂
Amount this saves my family/year:
$53
Don’t let the small number fool you! Simple, little changes like this add up! For not a lot of effort! By doing this it’s like not having to pay my cell phone bill for a month! Who wouldn’t take a free month of service?
