DIY Light Up Haunted House – Easy & Fun Halloween Craft

DIY Light Up Haunted House

When I was little my great-grandmother had a big dollhouse. I am assuming someone had made it. Inside there was furniture to move and tons of miniatures to create the perfect home. I loved playing with it! In fact, every time I was there that was my go-to thing. A few weeks ago I was thinking about the doll house. And the thought of making one popped into my head. BUT I have a boy. A boy who if I asked him if he wanted a doll house would look at me like I’ve lost my stinking mind. So I thought well, how awesome would it look sitting all decked out as a Haunted House? Fun right?

I was so excited. So I ran to the store and….those babies are a tad expensive! So while making one is still on my crafting bucket list, this year we decided to tone it down a tad. And make a smaller, light up haunted house. And guess what? It was SO fun. Seriously, the possibilities are endless! And it’s so easy! I think this could easily be a yearly tradition with the kiddos and creating your own, Halloween village!

DIY Haunted House

So you need a house right? These paper mache houses are PERFECT! I love that the lid comes off (so you can easily make it a light up house!) and they come in different shapes and sizes. I bought mine at Hobby Lobby and this size was $5.99. It was 40% off too, so that made it only $3.60! If you don’t have a Hobby Lobby close by, you can order them through their website, but they only come in a pack of 3 (multiple sizes).

I had also picked up a few wooden birdhouses to try before I found this!

You can also look at Amazon. They have different shaped houses, but they are a little more expensive.

Paper Mache House 9 1/2 in. by Craft Pedlars

Then you just need craft supplies! Go crazy and use what you have! I used paint, scrapbook paper, small pebbles, Popsicle sticks and even wax paper!

I cut out ghost shapes from the wax paper and hot glued them in the windows.

DIY Haunted House

To get it to light up I simply used an Energizer battery operated candle. I love that it flickers (because what haunted house doesn’t flicker?) and as a bonus, it smells like vanilla.

Since our house was lighting up I went ahead and stuck a piece of scrapbook ‘wallpaper’ inside.

I cut Popsicle sticks and painted them grey and just added the RIP with a fine tip Sharpie to create tombstones. The broom was a dollhouse miniature.

DIY Haunted House

Our boarded up front door was just broken Popsicle sticks.

I added a few other small miniatures like pumpkins and on the roof I added two crows.

Our house is pretty simple, but I like it. You can get as creative as you want!

Here are a few miniatures I found online that would be perfect!

Halloween Pumpkin Tip

I love Halloween! I want to get pumpkins and carve them now! But, if you carve them too early then by the big night they are all mushy and moldy. YUCK. But I have a Pumpkin tip for you (or Halloween hack if you will…)

You know those silica gel packs that come inside boxes (like in shoes)? Well the reason they put those in there is to help draw out the moisture. So simply take a package and add it to your pumpkin! The gel will help to keep the inside of the pumpkin dry and prevent mold and mushy-ness.

You don’t have to open the package. You can put it in as it is. Yay! Here is to jack-o-lanterns lasting longer on the porch! 🙂

Just a safety note:

This gel is poisonous so please watch the little ones! Don’t let them put it in their mouth! Even in the package. The package was designed to let the gel ‘breath’ so you will want to make sure that it doesn’t get put in their mouth!

Living room is decorated for Halloween (Part 1)

So the other day I shared with you my Recycled Bat wreath so I thought I would share some more of my Halloween decorations in my living room.

I have what some may call a pillow obsession. We have a big sectional. It’s kind of covered. Let’s see – the grey pillows are on my couch all year BUT I did just buy some orange and black chevron fabric (don’t tell Andy!) that I wanted to make some pillows out of! The grey shag one is pretty big and so comfy – I couldn’t put it away. It’s another “made that” pillow. Maybe a tutorial is coming? It was another project that half way through I thought I was insane for doing. I wanted two pillows and well, I only have one. (I really do need to do the other one though! I’m a freak when things don’t match up!). The bat one you can find the tutorial here. It’s hard to see but the little bat’s wings flap around and I love it!

The throw blanket I made. It’s just a simple rag quilt – I lined the other side with black flannel! And you can’t tell in the picture but it has really cool orange and black striped binding! I had some extra material left over so I turned it into the smaller throw pillow. (I also was able to make a table runner!)

Total spent: about $70 for blanket and 4 throw pillows (average of $14 each)

My shelf. I love having a big shelf. We don’t have a mantle so I need something to decorate!

I made my monster boxes a few days ago. At first I wasn’t sure I liked them and I was just going to throw them away but I’m really glad I gave them a chance! What do you think? Should they stay or should they go? All I did was pick up some paper mache boxes at Hobby Lobby I think it was about $4 (they were on sale – of course!) and I painted Dracula and Frankenstein (and glued on some screws to the side of Frank’s head!). For the mummy I used some muslin and before I wrapped it around the box I dirtied it up with a brown ink pad. Then just cut out some eyes from felt and glued them on.

And on the side is a witch lantern that I got at Hobby Lobby’s 90% off Halloween sale last year. I think I paid $1.50 for it?

Total cost: $5.50

This is one of eighteen25’s prints. You can get it for free here! I print mine at Office Max for $1.25. The crow is from the Dollar Tree.
Total: $2.25

The iron and mercury glass candle holder was a TJ Maxx Steal for $2.99 – it’s always out. I *love* Mercury glass! I needed a little height so I just accordion folded some Halloween paper and hot glued a kabob stick to them and stuck them in a jar of candy corn. Ha ha! The cutest – probably not. But I’m patiently waiting for this year’s Hobby Lobby 90% off sale! And the little pumpkin was a 10 cent thrift find.

Total spent: about $3

The garland is from Target ($10 — and I didn’t even get it on sale!) 🙂
Total cost for shelf: $20.75 ($27 if you count my wreath too!)

Last decoration for the day – I used left over black felt (from my bat pillow/wreath) and cut out bats. You can trace them or I just drew mine) and just simply sewed them together. I made a strand for each of our windows.
Total cost for 3 windows: $3

There it is — one of the corners of my living room.

Can’t wait to share more! 🙂

DIY: Halloween Recycled Bat Wreath Tutorial

I *love* Halloween. Really love it! So I’m pretty excited to start sharing some of my Halloween decorations with you!!

First up is my recycled bat wreath. I actually made this last year (I can’t believe how well it held up in storage!). I don’t any pictures of the actual process but it was so easy – fool proof. BUT with that said I will warn you. IT TOOK FOREVER!!! But it was cheap and I really love the way it looks!!

Alright – ready? You need:

A foam wreath
A box of dressmaker pins (yes – the WHOLE thing!)
1 piece of black felt
LOTS of newspaper (good thing we clip so many coupons right?!?)

Take your newspaper and cut out circles. They don’t have to be perfect – or even close to it. I did whole sections at a time – most of my circles weren’t really circles! More like oblong ovals.

After you get plenty cut out pick one and a pin. Now, this is all very technical…
Put your finger in the middle (or about the middle)
Fold it upwards around your finger.
Put the pin in the bottom part and pin right into your wreath.

Hooray! You folded the paper. Now. Repeat that about 700 times! You want to really pack it full!

I told you it took a while!!

When you are done you can cut out a few bats out of the felt (I just drew mine but you can print out a bat clip art to trace if you would like as well!) Then just pin your bat on! (I colored the tops of my pins black with a sharpie so they blended in!)

There it is – under my Halloween shelf. I really do love it. I think it looks awesome. And since last time I pulled it out the newspaper has started to get some brown edges which looks really cool. So if you start this project – know that it is worth it in the end!! Put on some awesome movies and just pin away! 🙂 I recommend storing this in a wreath storage bin!! I had it hung in our front closet for a little while (we have a double sided wreath hanger that goes over your door and I just put that over the coat rack!) but then after Christmas I found a great deal on a wreath holder. When I pulled it out this year – it was all in tact!! I would have been pretty upset if all of those pins fell out!

Total Cost: about $7

I’m going to link it here. If you like this project please share! 🙂

My wreath has been entered here:

Just Batty Pillow

I’ve been working on some Halloween ideas – is it to early? I love fall, it’s my favorite time of year. And Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! I have to admit, this bat pillow I made, I’m pretty much in love with.
I love the wings that move around. And I love the texture that it ads. Did I mention that it was quick, easy and cheap? Yes, all things I love.
Now, don’t go giving me credit for thinking this adorable pillow up. A few years ago I saw Amy from Ameroonie Designs made an adorable pillow. I wish it wouldn’t have taken me so long to make it!
You will need:
black felt – I used 5 pieces
solid black fabric – 2 pieces cut to desired size
black thread
pillow insert or stuffing
You can either print out a bat or draw one for a template. I just drew a quick one – it doesn’t have to be anything fancy! Then trace it onto the felt. I was able to get 3 bats per sheet of felt. Cut them out.
Pin the bats onto the fabric evenly spaced.
I chose not to sew down my bats’ wings. I sewed an upside down triangle shape on the center of the bats’ bodies leaving the wings free so they could ‘fly’.
Then place the second piece of black fabric on top of the piece with the bats sewn on. Sew together leaving an opening. Turn right side out and stuff full. Sew up the closing.
Admire your new pillow.
I will be linking up to these great parties.

Amanda
