Keep Healthy This Fall With All Natural Products!

Seasons change and it happens. You know IT. It comes out of nowhere. Sneaks up on you. Makes you miserable. And sometimes can just wipe you out completely. FOR DAYS.

You know what I’m talking about, right? Colds. The flu. The 24 hour bug. Coughs. Runny noses. Sour throats.

UGH.

While getting sick just happens there are things that you can do to prevent it. I’m a big believer in the ‘food is medicine’ thinking. It’s amazing once you start learning about the different health benefits that have been proven to be provided by some of the things that are in your pantry and refrigerator! Things like:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar (Provides healthy mucous flow)
  • Cinnamon (Promotes healthy breathing)
  • Honey (Provides healthful antioxidants)
  • Cayenne Pepper (Aids circulation)
  • And SOOO many more!

Y’all. Chicken soup has been a remedy for feeling under the weather for years. Because it helps!

The best part? No side effects of feeling tired and drowsy. No elevated blood pressure. No dry mouth. And it’s delicious! 🙂

I love all natural products and approaches. They are always my go to. I’m so excited that I found a company that when we need a bit of extra help has the same philosophy as I do.

Staying on top of seasonal allergies is huge for us. Increasing their vitamin C intake + hiding lots of fruits and veggies in our meals for the extra vitamins that are essential to our immune system. We do have to hide them, to get the kiddo to eat them, haha! We also use natural remedies vs. most OTC cold/flu medications because honestly, the side effects are just awful with those. We encourage lots of warm and hot liquids too, especially hot tea and chicken broth.

“Mike, Sam and I have been battling some icky symptoms already this fall. My advice: lots of fluids and rest! I’ve also been mindful to disinfect things whenever I’m able. If you can’t always make it to a sink, a little bottle of hand sanitizer nearby is excellent.”

“Eating well is so important. Of course you need to eat fruits and veggies, but also some spices have been shown to have awesome health benefits. A good multi-vitamin can help fill in any missing nutritional gaps. We also make sure that we are practicing good hand washing. Lots and lots of hand washing!”

10 Ways To Keep Kids Entertained While They Are Sick

I always say that there is nothing worse than a sick kiddo. Your heart just breaks for them. But I lied. There IS something worse. A bored, sick kiddo. That’s a double whammy. They don’t feel good, are tired of laying in bed and you have to be the bad guy of saying things like “No, we can’t go outside.” or “Stop running around. Why don’t you come sit on the couch?”

????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Here is a list of kid and mom approved activities to do the next time your child gets sick. Obviously napping is one of the best things to do while fighting a cold, but it’s not always practical. (Although, I could always go for a nap!) But these activities are nice and calm, making it easy to rest while enjoying them.

Tip: Pick up a TV tray to make playing in bed or on the couch easier. They are inexpensive and come in handy for sick days or even for taking on car trips!

  • Card games or dice games are always fun! For young kids play Go Fish or Matches and for a little bit older children you can play Crazy 8’s, Farkle or Yahtzee.
  • Put together a puzzle.
  • Read a new book.
  • Download a new game app on your tablet.
  • Draw, color or paint with water colors.
  • Watch a new movie – or just a favorite! You can rent or buy movies directly on Amazon and stream them to your device or rent one at your local Redbox.
  • Play with play dough! You can even add a few drops of essential oils in them. Lavender for calming, eucalyptus to help clear the airways, or thieves or Frankincense can help with respiratory support.
  • Legos
  • Play in the tub. Sometimes a bath can help make you feel better. Let the kids take some toys in the tub, relax and play!
  • Get crafty. Decorate the tissue box. Blowing your nose is more fun when you are grabbing tissues from a personalized masterpiece.

As parents, when our kids are sick we want to do anything and everything in our power to help them. And that includes giving them the right medicines. I’m a HUGE fan of Maty’s all natural products. They aren’t just for kids either! Maty’s has lines specifically for children, but they also make products that we can all enjoy! I actually get excited about giving them to my family because they are just absolutely loaded with good stuff.

matys

I’ll be honest, I’m completely new to Maty’s. I’m so glad that my friend Jenni introduced them to me! I’m a huge believer in the power of good food and what natural products can do for you.

3

Now, I know that this is the cough syrup, but check out all of this good stuff in it! All of these have been used for year and years and years to keep healthy and fight off colds. They’ve been used for this long, because they work! 🙂 I’ve actually been adding a spoonful to my hot tea lately, just for an extra dose of goodness.

Joshua had a cough not too long ago and he used this cough medicine. We were really happy with how well it worked!

2

Seriously. Everything about this label made me super happy. Like get up and dance happy.

Moms Check In: Cold and Flu Tips

This post was sponsored by Boogie Wipes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Cold and flu season is going to be knocking on your door soon (if it hasn’t already!) Are you ready? They say it’s the spookiest time of year and not because of Halloween! I really don’t think there is anything worse than sick kiddos. You would do anything to help them feel better. The best thing you can do is to help prevent the sickness in the first place.

Tips For Cold and Flu Season

Want more awesome tips for the season? Join us at the #SolutionToSnotty Twitter Party, Thursday October 22 from 8:30-9:30 PM (Eastern). We will be giving away $400 worth of gift cards and awesome prize packs! RSVP below!

– Eating a balanced diet with lots of fruits and veggies. Even if you have to hide them in their favorite foods, getting these vitamins and nutrients are important in keeping their immune systems up.

– Drink plenty of room temperature water, hot tea with honey and lemon, warm apple cider with a bit of cinnamon (bonus points if you can add some apple cider vinegar!) and hot chicken broth. Did you know that cold water and iced drinks can cause mucus to thicken. So can milk and other dairy products.

– Keep a humidifier and/or essential oil diffuser going. Turning on the heat makes the house nice and toasty, but it also dries out the air. Put some moisture back into the air. It’s good for your sinuses.

– Congestion? Sit in the bathroom with the shower running hot water. Breathe in the steam for 15-20 minutes. You can also pick up a bunch of eucalyptus from your local florist. Hang it upside down on the shower head in your bathroom. The steam will release the natural essential oils. Not only does it smell amazing, but it’s great for congestion and

– Sleep with their head propped up. This helps them to breathe better and keeps post-nasal drip from causing irritation.

– Massage the face and/or apply pressure using your fingers to the sinus cavity areas. That helps move mucus and sinus pressure out of the area.

What the moms are saying:

Jenni-Eaves1-213x300

“We struggle so much with allergies this time of year, and of course with the kids back in school – germs are everywhere. Keeping antibacterial cleaners around always help. Spraying door knobs, cabinets and refrigerator handles, and anything else that gets touched alot. We also run a humidifier to keep moisture in the air in the winter months. The kiddo HATES it when I use tissue, toilet paper or paper towels on his runny nose time and time again. They’re just too rough. Boogie Wipes are a life-saver for us!”

“I’m uber aware of germs this time of year as the weather starts to change. To help avoid any in our house, I make sure we’re eating healthy and drinking plenty of water to help boost our immune system. We also do a lot of hand washing. If we do get the sniffles, I love using Boogie Wipes to stay gentle on skin while tackling the snotties.”

“I’m a big advocate for vitamin C! Breakfast always starts with a big glass of orange juice in our house. At the first sign of a cold we are sure to have an extra vitamin. And speaking of extra…extra hand washing is always a big plus!”

How To Make Veggies Fun For Kids

How To Make Veggies Fun

When it comes to snacks and packing lunches for our kids there are so many options! But sometimes when we offer up vegetables instead of treats it is met with grumbles or sighs of disappointment. However creating healthy habits early is really so important. And if that means making vegetables fun to help kids reach for them (and realize “Hey, this is really yummy!”) then I am all for it!

Here is a quick and easy way to kick the plain ol’ celery sticks up a notch in the fun department by creating Celery Friends!

How To Make Veggies Fun

First wash your celery and cut in half. Spread with peanut butter. (If you need to make them nut free try Sunbutter!)

How To Make Veggies Fun

How To Make Veggies Fun

These candy eyes, mustaches, teeth and lips can make just about anything fun!

How To Make Veggies Fun

Use them to make silly faces in your peanut butter.

Other Ideas:

You can really use these in so many ways to make kid’s food fun.

  • Make a face in a dish of hummus and pack with carrot sticks.
  • Add eyes to cherry tomatoes and put in a side salad.
  • Stick funny faces on apples or bananas.

Let children make their own funny faces!

If you are packing a lunch for your child, spread the peanut butter (or SunButter) on your child’s celery sticks. Fill a small container with the eyes and mouths. Wait for your child to come home and tell you how their lunch was the talk of the lunch table! Kids think it’s so much fun to make funny faces with their food. And it’s so much more fun to play with your food before you eat it. Getting your kids to not only eat their veggies but to associate them with positive thoughts? That’s a mom win!

Top Laundry Hacks

laundry hacks

At our house it seems like some things are never ending and laundry is definitely one of those things. Last week I was so excited. I thought I had it all finished. And when I say all, I met all. Sheets, pillows, rugs, clothes…everything.

The basket was empty and I was doing a happy dance. And then Joshua came in with his backpack and said “Oh, sorry. I forgot to give you my gym uniform!” and he took out the stinkiest shirt and shorts that you could every imagine.

Oh well. I suppose by the next morning the basket would be filled again. Right?

This week we have teamed up with the awesome people over at Febreze In-Wash Odor Eliminator and Downy Wrinkle Releaser to bring you our best #LaundryHacks. Because if you have to do laundry, you might as well have some awesome tricks up your sleeve!

Oh, laundry! No matter how much we do, it seems there is always more! Over the years, I’ve learned to quickly deal with stains so that removing them is easier. Taking advantage of great products also helps remove stains and smells. These are some of my favorite laundry hack ideas to keep things fresh and clean:

Clean your washing machine by filling the basin with warm water and 2 cups white vinegar. Let stand for an hour, then run the cycle as usual.

Get clothes dry faster (and fluffier!) by putting a couple of tennis balls in the dryer.

Use a mesh drying bag so you never lose another sock!

Sweet Pennies From Heaven

Laundry is the never-ending chore. It goes away for 2 seconds and then it’s right back. Nothing is worse than rough and stiff towels. I like mine super soft and fluffy. To fluff yours up, just add your towels to the washer, using hot water and one cup of vinegar and run a full cycle. Next, run another full cycle with hot water and 1/2 cup of baking soda. After 2nd cycle, dry towels in the dryer with tennis balls or dryer balls. You should notice a marked difference. If not, then repeat the process.

Amanda-626x1024

@its_a_fab_life

I’m a huge fan of sorting the laundry before it actually goes to the laundry! We have a 3 bin laundry hamper that really saves us time. One for towels, darks and lights. No more going through a pile!

And I was probably the last person on Earth to know how to wash pillows in the washing machine, but it’s so easy. You just wash them like your regular laundry and when you dry them be sure to throw in a few tennis balls or dryer balls. Nothing is better than getting in a bed with clean sheets and clean, sweet smelling pillows!

Here are our favorite laundry supplies!

febreze_bottle_with_glow_v3

Remember when I told you about Joshua’s super stinky gym uniform? It is (supposed to be) brought home every Friday after 5 days of gym. And man does that thing stink. And if he forgets to bring it home? The next week. SHEESH!! Febreze In-Wash Odor Eliminator is exactly what we need to get the worst smells out!

Febreze In-Wash Odor Eliminator is no match against things like sweat and sports uniforms, smoke, pets and mildew.

downy

I’m busy! I don’t have time to pull out the iron so Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus is amazing! A few sprays and just a minute makes the wrinkles vanish allowing me to get myself (and my family!) out the door on time and looking amazing.

Back To School Tips You Need To Know

Great back to school ideas

Joshua just started school last week. When he started kindergarten I was such a mess – crying, blubbering, worrying. I had to stop at the gas station on the way home. I was so preoccupied thinking of my baby growing up I almost drove off with the pump still in my car! (This is what we call a hot mess….)

Now he’s starting junior high and I cried again. Junior high is full of lockers, changing classes, and independence. I’ve learned quite a few back to school tips and tricks over the years. I can’t say watching them grow up gets easier, but it does make you feel proud!

Here are some of our best back to school tips!

stephanie

We are finishing our final days of summer, enjoying all the time we can together. Sam is definitely excited for school to begin. We’ve talked a lot about being back at school and getting back in our regular routine. I think talking a lot before back to school helps calm nerves. Talk about their apprehensions to help calm them down plus share positive ideas about what to look forward to. We’re also starting to get in our normal bedtime routine, which I know helps his body to adjust. Cheers to a great school year ahead!

Jenni-Eaves1-213x300

It’s back to school time for us too! We’ve been back for 2 weeks now and I think we’re settling in nicely. My back to school tips are starting 2 weeks before school starts to begin your routine. Bathtime, picking out clothes, going to bed early, etc. That way when school DOES start, it’s not a shock all at once. Another tip is start packing in plenty of Vitamin C before school starts because, believe me, kids are germy! We’re 2 weeks in and little man has already caught a cold bug. Pack some anti-bac wipes in their lunchbox or backpack to use before lunch too.

Back to school can be overwhelming! Josh just started Jr. High and it means lockers, changing classes and a whole lot of school supplies. We got our schedules on back to school night, but I could tell he was still anxious. I called the school just to see if we could stop in, practice his locker combination, drop off all of his supplies and do a walk through a couple of times finding each of his class. If you have a child who seems a little anxious – just ask! Being prepared made him (and myself!) feel so much more confident on the first day of school.
